I had an ableist Uber driver the other day. It was a mile and a half ride, and he asks why I didnât just walk. I tell him I have health issues that make that unsafe. He says, âWell, to motivate you, I just had both my knees replaced and I would do it.â Cool. Not the same fucking thing.
So I explain that I have POTS. If I walked that far uphill, thereâs a real chance Iâd faint, and even if I didnât, my entire day would be wrecked because my body would be completely out of whack. His response? âWell, you should always try. Maybe youâll get better. Plus, thereâs a fire station on the way.â
Why the fuck are you saying this to me? You are paid to drive people places. That is literally the whole job. This isnât a TED Talk, and I didnât ask for motivation, medical advice, or a comparison to your knees.
And just in case this needs to be said: some disabilities donât get better. Some of us donât get parts swapped out and sent back on our way.
No, he did not get a tip. And yes, I contacted Uber support, made sure I never get matched with him again, and told them exactly why.
(The best part of this was, yeah, I've had my knees replaced too and the bounce back is not anywhere near as easy as he made it sound. lol)
