Ability Categorization Explanation
written by Percival Mazarine
abilities are sorted into four main categories depending on how they effect the body and mind. the four categories are Cognitive, Physical, Vocal, Elemental. Cognitive Abilities effect the mind and emotions, Physical abilities effect the physical form and appearance, Vocal Abilities effect the vocal cords and speech, and lastly Elemental effect both the mind, body, and even the emotions of the elf with the ability. not only are they sorted on how they effect the elf with the ability they are also sorted on how they are passed down from parent to child.
Cognitive abilities
Cognitive abilities are sorted into two subcategories, Mental and Emotional.
the Mental abilities (Telepath and Memser) effect the minds of the elf and those around them, they use similar blocking techniques, and have the strongest mental power and awareness of the location of their consciousness than any other elf. they deal with constant headaches from the energy it takes to keep their consciousness in their mind.
the Emotional abilities (Inflictor, Empath, *Enhancer) effect the emotions of the elves and those around them, hence the name. elves with these abilities are either completely emotionally distant, or highly emotional. they deal with emotional breakdowns from the stress of their or others emotionally
as there is only one Dyscryer, it has not been placed in a subcategory. if there is any more information found on the ability, it may be placed in a category in the future.
*while Enchaner’s don’t necessarily effect the emotions it works so similarly to the Empath ability and every Enchaner has had a Empath parent
Physical Abilities
physical abilities effect the physical state or appearance (Vanisher, Phaser) or effect the location or form of the objects around them (Conjurer, Fluctuator). they effect the body and how it feels in the world. the elves with these abilities can get sensory overloads from to much sensory input, weather that be to much light for Vanishers or to many objects for a Conjurer, and will need a empty and quite space to calm down.
Vocal Abilities
vocal abilites effect the vocal cords and the voice of those with the ability (Polyglot, *Beguiler, Vociferator). all vocal abilities used to all be considered Polyglots because of how similar they are but over time it came into light that they where three separate abilities. all vocal abilities can mimic but they each of a type of mimicking that comes easily to them. Polyglots, mimics accents and voices. Beguilers emotional tone of voice no matter what they are feeling, and Vociferators can mimic any noise. while it’s normally Polyglots that will manifest a second ability, it’s often forgotten that Beguiler’s will also manifest a second time once in a while. in rare cases Vociferators have manifested a second time as well (there are two on record)
*Beguilers are also considered an emotional ability because of how it effects those who hear it, but it is categorized as a Vocal ability because of its similarities to Polyglot
Elemental Abilities
the Elemental Abilities is the largest category of abilities, and it has two subcategories Illusionist (Flasher, Shade) and Nimbiferous (Guster, Froster, Charger, Hydrokinetic) and the two uncategorized abilities (Technopath, Psionipath).
all Elemental abilities effect the body and mind of the elf. when manifesting, the elf’s physiology will change to align with the element they control (IE. a Froster will no longer feel cold, but will also get overheated easily). elves with elemental abilities also have somewhat delicate emotional states and easily lose control of their ability if upset, which is why they can be considered unstable. they also hear their element “speak” to them and can be heard speaking back to it at times in a “language” only they can understand, which furthers the implication that they are unstable.
the illusionist abilities (Flasher, Shade) control the dark and light, while they are linked to the emotions of the elf it’s no where near the same level as the Nimbiferous abilities. while Flashers are highly valued and vital part of the society, Shades are treated as untrustworthy and are outcasts. but they are both necessary and vital to our society. when they work together they can create illusions that are a incredibly useful tools that aren’t used as often as they should.
the elves with Nimbiferous abilities (Guster, Froster, Charger, Hydrokinetic) have the power to create storms and other natural disasters, and it’s something they can do from the moment they manifest. if untrained they can be a liability and cause destruction to the in the world around them. out of all the Elemental abilities those who have Nimbiferous abilities emotion’s have one of the strongest links to their ability. the stronger the emotion the less control they will have which can cause them to be dangerous if they are upset whether they have training or not. because of this the abilities in this subcategory are considered the most unstable, coming second to [REDACTED]. it’s vital to get them training from the moment they manifest, and if they run in the family it’s advised to start emotional control exercises pre manifesting age.
while Psionipath’s and Technopath’s don’t control an element, they are very similar in nature to the other elemental abilities.
Psionipath’s create force fields that are made of a mix of pure light and energy, which are two things that other elementals can control (Flashers, Chargers). their mental state is also somewhat similar to a Nimbiferous and their emotions can be similarly unstable if not taught the proper exercises. though according to research it’s also similar in nature to [REDACTED].
Techopaths while not having an emotional link to their ability, constantly mention technology speaking to them, which is something that is considered to be exclusive to elemental abilities. in rare cases Techopath’s can control technology which further is the categorization as an elemental ability.
