Bold of you to think that Gale won’t be in control during John's ruts 😆 Bucky is single-mindedly focused on breeding during his ruts, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t listen to what Gale wants or needs.

In the omegaverse au I have in my head, an alpha in rut isn’t feral, they won’t force themselves on an omega just because of the rut. They still need all the consent they would otherwise. Actually, due to their heightened sense of smell during ruts, I think they would be turned off by omega fear or distress pheromones more easily. And knots take longer to deflate during ruts, so it's essential to be in a comfortable position for it.

For Bucky specifically, his ruts are about physical contact first and foremost. He’s like velcro, Gale can’t go further than the bathroom without Bucky being attached to him. It’s about the instinct of protecting and bonding with his mate not only during sex but between rounds too.

If Gale's mind is clear (he’s not in heat), he can guide them through the rut pretty easily. I think he’s good at pacing Bucky, not letting him overexert himself even if his instincts are pushing Bucky. He also has some tricks to calm Bucky down if Bucky's getting too worked up, like asking Bucky to help build a nest with him or asking him to scent various clothing items.

If Gale's heat syncs up with John's rut, they get really messy and bruises are inevitable, but ultimately, the senseless mating part only lasts for a few hours.

That's a sweet headcanon! I love that John validates Gale so naturally.

I think Gale is a very stubborn and independent person, so it takes him a long time to let Bucky treat him with as much gentleness and affection as Bucky wants. In the beginning, he’s suspicious of tender gestures and refuses help in any way, but especially during a heat. Bucky has to court him in unisex ways (i.e. nothing traditionally omega-specific), and Gale treats him like a fwb rather than a mate for weeks.

But oh, when he finally learns to trust Bucky and be vulnerable with him, Gale gets very sweet. He soaks up Bucky's love and loves to cuddle with him. He likes romantic gestures (e.g. thoughtful gifts, his blue scarf), once he sees that they're gestures of love and not of feminization. He’s an affectionate partner once he accepts Bucky as his mate.

That would be awkward indeed! These kinds of things would be a problem in an abo universe for sure. But we have to consider how the universe would be different from ours, since obviously the Germans don’t want a bunch of alphas being aggressive in rut either. They must have an established solution for this in universe.

I don’t really see Buck as a beta though, I must admit. 😅

One of the reasons I fell for this ship is because the Bucks are equals, it would be weird to put one in submission out of weakness? They work so well as a team too how to fit abo with that? I do see Bucky as a 100% alpha tho, he is way too dominant and horny in my opinion but Buck is a mystery he is way more quiet and calm, but he is shown to take command easily, the only au I have atm is Alpha Bucky helping Omega Buck to run away from home with him, just the two of them on the run thats it.

Yeah, a writer has to approach the au with nuance if they want a balanced abo because the tropes call for imbalance. Since these two characters have a balanced relationship, good abo can’t be stereotypical. With some other pairings where there’s an imbalance already in canon - e.g. age difference, obvious dominance difference etc. - the stereotypical abo tropes work well too. So it all depends on your pairing.
