The Comical Past
Vanessa was a normal teenager up until her fifteenth birthday. Within a week her mutant gene had become apparent and her father (who had suspected he wasn't her biological dad) beat her and threw her out. Her mother let him.
Vanessa found herself scared and lone and left New Jersey for New York. While there, she met a pimp who found her powers intriguing. Within a year of working for him, she was moved to Boston to service a wider range of political clients. It was there that she met Wade Wilson. The two fell in love, and planned to save up, quit their morally ambiguous careers and live a normal picket fence life. However, when Wade found out he had cancer, he broke up with Nessa. He didn't tell her the real reason, that he didn't want her to have to watch him die. Instead, he tried to make her hate him and told her that they were never serious.
[In comic canon there isn't anything between this and Vanessa posing as Domino for Tollivar so the following is inferred and headcanon]
After Wade left her, Vanessa couldn't take much more of being used and forced. Using knowledge she had gleaned from Wade, she starts training herself in combat skills. And from there, she expands her jobs, convincing rich men to employ her to spy and kill. Slowly, she shifts from prostitution to mercenary.
Mercenary Days, X-Force & Wade Wilson Vanessa's first appearance ever was actually in New Mutants #98 posing as Domino. She infiltrated the X-force team, run by Cable at the time, under Tolliver’s orders to spy on him. Tolliver was an arms dealer who must have contacted her through a range of her various aliases and employers.
Unfortunately for her, she came to care about her team and stalled bombing the headquarters until Deadpool came to force her/warn her of Tolliver’s ever increasing rage. It seems that he's seen her since her becoming a mercenary and him becoming Deadpool. What happened between them, and how they dealt with everything, is unclear. But their relationship is now abusive and dysfunctional.
From here, Cable knew ‘Domino’ was a spy and forced her to take him to Tolliver. Upon finding the real Domino, Vanessa was revealed in her true form. She manages to escape and goes into hiding with her friend Tina Valentino as her ‘twin’.
Deadpool tracks her down, along with Sluggo. Sluggo kills Tina and Vanessa flees. DP and Sluggo follow her back to Tina’s place only to be interrupted by Domino and her friends. Domino kidnaps her former replacement, only not killing her due to a promise she made to Cable to find the X-force. Nessa knows where they are. After helping her to find the team, Nessa disappears without a trace. She is in fact, hiding out back home. Her mother is guilt ridden allowing her father to kick her out.
Vanessa went looking for Tolliver’s will to claim his 'reward’ but was defending Deadpool when she was fatally wounded. By copying Deadpool’s healing factor, she was able to survive. Garrison Kane, Weapon X, carried her away once she was wounded and helped nurse her back to health.
Copycat tried to live a peaceful life in San Francisco, California with Kane after leaving hospital. However, Deadpool goes looking for her and after finding out she’s settled down with Kane, goes on a bit of a spiral. He sets out to kill Kane, leading to him demanding that if Kane truly loved her he’d save her and not himself, almost killing them both with his blades. Wolverine intervenes and saves her.
Later, Psycho-Man kidnapped her, thinking she was Garrison Kane (he wanted Kane’s advanced technology) and kept her in the Microverse in order to blackmail Kane into saving her and thus handing over his tech. Garrison is so in love with her he sets out to bring her back. She was rescued by Kane, Cable and Domino. On the way home, she and Domino finally reconciled.
Taskmaster and the Wizard sought to gain revenge on Deadpool and hired Copycat to impersonate the super strong Titania and gain Deadpool’s trust. Wade wasn’t to be fooled and knew it was her all along. Weapon X, Seduce Deadpool & Be Mauled to Death
Vanessa joined the Weapon X Project with Kane. It seems that they were still sort of dating at the time he first joined. The more time he spent in the program, the more he began to lose himself. He grew colder towards Vanessa, and a little abusive, but convinced her to join. Once there Vanessa was asked to recruit Deadpool, and to do whatever it took. She and Kane appear to break up at some point while they were both there, and he stops caring about her.
The power enhancement by Weapon X affected Vanessa’s memory and she was incapable of recalling her mission. She tried to seduce Wade instead of recruit him, pretending to be girl after girl that he would date. He finally set her straight, telling her he knew every girl was her, and that they needed to sort everything out. He knew something was wrong, and given her track record she was probably in trouble.
They begin dating but after Vanessa finds out about Siryn, and Deadpool sort of cheating on her, she breaks it off. [She also assaults Siryn in her Deadpool impersonation first.]
After joining the Weapon X Project himself, Wade finds out what happened with Vanessa. They used her, brainwashed her, experimented on her. The more her powers became unstable due to the experiments, the crazier she got and had trouble seeing things properly. Having become a liability, Weapon X decided to kill her. They ask Wade to do it, but he refused and attempted to warn her.
By this point Vanessa was breaking down at a molecular level, she couldn't hold proper form and needed desperate help. Weapon X was hunting her down. Kane was sent out to kill Deadpool and Copycat both. Wade fought him on his own, not knowing that another Weapon X agent, Sabretooth, had also been sent out. Copycat was mortally wounded at the Bronx Zoo in New York City, and Sabretooth was long gone when Wade got to her. She died in his arms.
Present Day During Deadpool's Wedding issue, it was revealed that Copycat is still alive. However, her current whereabouts are completely unknown.
Copycat's body was taken by Weapon X and revived using her powers to absorb regeneration skills. She was kept in a containment part of the facility and used to experiment on and assist in research and other projects. But Vanessa is good at reading people. She developed a relationship with one of the young scientists and convinced him to help her escape.
Once out, she had to keep a low profile. She disguised herself constantly, flickering from one menial job to the next. While at the Weapon X facility, she heard rumours and theories about her origins. This becomes a priority for her to work out.
The problem is the experiments have made her weak, her powers unstable and her memory foggy. Does Wade know she's alive? Where's Kane? Her parents? Did she have a kid? So many questions and so few answers.
