Futurism and Surrealism
Question: Describe the differences between Futurism and Surrealism. Use works of art to clarify your points. Write at least 5 sentences.
The Elephant Celebes (above), Abstract Speed (below)
Answer: Futurism is an artistic and social movement; Surrealism is a cultural movement. Futurism emphasized themes associated with the future, usually dealing with speed, technology, youth and violence, also objects like cars and airplanes, cities... Surrealism focused on surprising its audience with the unexpected. For example, Max Ernst's The Elephant Celebes appears at a distance to be the figure of an elephant, but the closer you get to the painting, the more surprising unreal it gets; details catch you off guard and make you reconsider its purpose. Giacomo Balla's Abstract Speed + Sound might appear to be a bunch of random colorful lines, but considering the concept, one might see how Balla interpreted the way sound travels, how speed, whether by car or plane, might look in the future.
Giacomo Balla, Abstract Speed, 1913.
