Because we need something pretty right now #beforeandafter #accessiblecondo #bedroom there were a few structural items that had to happen in here but nothing too major. I wanted to create a fabulous giant headboard to join two twin beds together. The #woodblock #wallpaper inspired me to use a #fauxbois fabric from @duralee on the headboard. Wood on wood. Simple, sophisticated, fun pattern on pattern. To keep things accessible and easy the two beds share a centred table, above the table are two #tolomeo lamps from @artemide_lighting which I love for ease of operation, quality and looks. Swipe left for the process. I designed a template on paper for the shape and size. My upholsterer makes the base in plywood. We test for scale, shape and installation. The best way for this headboard to be installed was an adhesive that went directly from headboard to wall. The piece was braced in plays for days to make sure it was secure. Coming through the front door of this condo you walked into several roadblocks with angled walls, doors, half walls, decorative posts, bulky ceiling details and bad lighting. When I’m designing a space for someone who uses a wheelchair my first thought is how do we make this simple to get around. How do we remove anything that isn’t necessary. I want to create as much freedom as possible. That’s why so many of the things I choose move easily or can be pushed easily. A lot of times means that’s wheels, if the homeowner is on wheels why shouldn’t many of the things that could be obstacles not be on wheels too? Or at least be able to be pushed out if the way by anyone. That’s how the bubble chair came to be placed here. Obviously I want this place to be as cool as the homeowner and I wanted you to know it the moment you come through the door. Functionally I wanted the space as open as possible, for light too. The bubble chair gave me a cool sculptural element the moment you walk in clearly ( pun intended) denoting the beginning of the living room. Floating from a chain anyone can bump into the chair at a dance party or just coming home without feeling like they are hitting a barrier. It’s sort of a walk that moves and you can see through. Kind of a barrier free barrier. I extended bulkheads around the room but o allow for several pot lights that would not work on a cement ceiling. Herringbone woof floor was chosen for its warmth, timelessness and interest. Rugs look nice but can be a pain when using a wheelchair so I usually avoid them so the flooring is very important when you’re seeing so much of it. And of course here I am having an #jamesbond moment or is it an #austinpowers moment? #beforeandafter continued from yesterday. This accessible condo was a gut and rebuild. Here in the office I took out a wall that boarders the office and a hall to the master bedroom ( I taped out what the profile of the built ins would look like for the homeowner to get a visual) This gave me additional space for built ins that are accessible from both sides. The built ins blocked by the sleeper sofa access from the other side. Drawers on the office side hold bedding for the pull out.
