Remembering Achala Sachdev, Hindi cinema's one of the most respected screen mothers, on her birth anniversary today. Born in Peshawar in 1920, Achala made her film debut with Fashionable Wife (1938). She shifted to Pune after marrying Clifford Douglas Peters,who had a factory in Bhosari. Achala Sachdev began her career in Hindi film industry from an early age, and worked with All India Radio from the 1940s. She appeared in numerous Hindi films from the 1950s. She became popular for essaying roles as a mother and grandmother. Her most memorable role was as Balraj Sahni's wife in the 1965 blockbuster Waqt, where she was part of the legendary song "Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen". Most people referred to her as Zohra Jabeen ever since. Some of her most memorable films are Azaad, Arzoo, Amanat, Waqt, Mera Naam Joker, Julie, Karm, Haqeeqat, Himalay Ki God Mein, Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, Prem Pujari, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Chandni, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kabhi Kushi Kabhe Gham, and Kal Ho Naa Ho. She also was a part of English films such as Nine Hours to Rama and Merchant Ivory film The Householder. Achala Sachdev died of respiratory failure in Pune on April 30, 2012.

The film is based on the legend of Heer Ranjha, the epic poem Heer by Punjabi poet, Waris Shah, written in 1766. The film is unique in the fact that the entire film and its dialogue is in verse, Kaifi Azmi writing the verse dialogue.
The film's songs and music are notable as is the photography by Jal Mistry, who shot most of Chetan Anand's films and won the Filmfare Award for the film. The film also showcases some of the best dialogues from the legendary actor Raaj Kumar.
