SNOW: The Hauntley Inn was still not always her Hauntley Inn.
She wandered from room to room, from decade to decade. Most often, she saw the inn the way that Lady Miracle wanted her to see it: in its perfect splendor in the months after the Captain’s death. It was pristine, sparkling, brand new– and lonely for all of that untouched beauty. Yet every now and then, she opened a door and saw the Hauntleys themselves as they sat and sipped blood from wine glasses while reading an old edition of the Swynlake Squire. Or she would go upstairs and hear music from the ballroom, then find herself swept up in the celebrations of one Lord James Rackham II, son of Oliver Rackham’s eldest brother, new owner of the Inn, destined to die within the fortnight. But for that night, he reveled with rich friends and plotted his revenge.
Even more rarely, since Gem had broken in, Snow thought she heard the murmurs of her friends just beyond the doors, or down the hall, or up the stairs. When she heard these voices, she went running through the whole inn, throwing doors open carelessly. But the rooms were always empty. Those voices remained beyond her, in a different time that she didn’t have access to– as if her friends had clicked ‘play’ on a song a few seconds before she could and so she danced off-beat, misaligned.
She tried to cling to hope...
