Rolling over, you checked your phone. Again. The blocky numbers read '3:16, 14th Feb'. You blinked and stared at the screen like it had personally wronged you.
Seriously, how hard was it to go to sleep? For at least the past hour you have been tossing and turning, somehow feeling awake and tired at the same time. Your blankets were itchy, slightly too warm. None of the strange pretzel-like positions you twisted yourself into felt right. Your eyelids were as heavy as weights, begging to be closed, but the second you did, your mind conjured up some random thing you had to do tomorrow, forcing you awake again.
Outside, rain hammered against your window. A harsh storm, one that had been going since you began trying to fall asleep. In any other circumstance, you would've found the constant pattering comforting, but right now it wasn't getting you any closer to falling asleep.
A flash of sudden lightning illuminated your room, followed by a great rumbling of thunder. You groaned in frustration. At this rate, you were going to be up all night.
"Maybe I just need some water," you thought.
After a moment of preparation, you flung your blanket off yourself. Immediately you regretted the action, as the cold night air met your body. You quickly got up and wrapped yourself in whatever pyjamas you could find, trying to stave off the cold. It only half worked.
You made your way to the kitchen. Flipping on the lights, you got yourself a glass of water.
Not even that was refreshing! The sudden low temperature of the water caused your teeth to ache painfully when the liquid entered your mouth.
Angrily, you put the cup back down on the countertop, not bothering to pour the contents down the sink. Truly, you couldn't be bothered anymore. Heavy tiredness clawed at you, yet your body refused to submit to it. The worst part was the fact that you didn't know why. There was no reason why you shouldn't have been able to fall asleep; you did your usual night routine, even going to bed a bit earlier than you normally do. Why was your body just being stupid?
At that moment there was a knock at your front door. You thought you might explode.
You genuinely considered not answering: after all, who the hell comes knocking on somebody's door at three in the morning? But, against your better judgement, you decide to answer anyway.
You practically stomp to the front door, ready to give whoever was behind it a piece of your mind. After an embarrassingly long fight with the lock, you pulled open the door, and-
It was Chance. With a bouquet.
You must be dreaming.
He was completely sodden, literally dripping from the pouring rain. The red roses gripped in his hand might've once been nice, but they too had clearly taken a battering due to the weather. His shades had little droplets all over them. It was a miracle he could see out of them at all. His black fedora trembled threateningly in the wind, like it was just about to fly straight off his head.
Chance wiped his shades quickly- clearly surprised to see you answer the door so fast- although the action did nothing more than move the water around on the lens.
"H-hey! Happy Valentine’s!" he exclaimed confidently, offering you the bouquet.
Furrowing your brows, you rubbed your face exasperatedly. Receiving a gift on Valentines day in any other situation, especially from Chance, would have caught you off guard, maybe making you feel flustered. But now, you were just extremely tired and confused. You lent against the doorframe, and pushed the front door closed a bit to stop the rain getting it.
"Chance... it's three in the morning," you muttered, not in the mood to raise your voice any louder. "What are you doing?"
He remained unperturbed by your response. "Giving you a Valentine’s gift," he said as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Listen, I'll explain in a sec, but first, could I, uh, come in? The weather out here is not too great."
Lightning flashed again, followed by a great clap of thunder. Chance snapped his head up like he was concerned the lightning was going to strike him.
Even in your sleepy state, you were at least cognitive enough to recognise his gift had real affection behind it, despite the unusual delivery. You did actually appreciate what he's done. A warm feeling rose in your chest as you re-examined the flowers. Eventually you gave in to the metaphorical 'sad, wet puppy' outside your door.
"Fine. Come in."

authors notes: about the header image, I'm really sorry but I have no idea who drew it! I just found it on pinterest. The original image was actually Elliot x Chance, but I felt really inspired when I saw it to write some reader x Chance.
also, while this is a valentines fic, I'm literally writing this almost a week before valentines on the 6th feb. I'm super excited for people to read this, I'm super happy with how it turned out. Hope you enjoyed!
