Did you know making Apple Cider Vinegar yourself is way more beneficial than using the store-bought version? I’ll show you how to make it more potent and cus...
PH is everything.
Yep, finally getting around to this!
Apple cider vinegar is a little treasure for your pantry with dozens of health benefits from weight loss to skin care. I actually use this stuff on my face whenever I have nasty scars or breakouts. I always see this as a hair treatment on Pinterest and YouTube videos, but held off on it for so long as I tested other methods and products. Apple cider vinegar is excellent for relieving a dry and itchy scalp, combating product build-up and dandruff, restoring pH balance, and adding shine to your hair. It’s also a very common method among those with Afro-textured hair, particularly as a treatment for protective styles like locs without taking them out.
This past week, my hair started feeling super heavy and greasy as I pushed it to day 8— a horrible mistake due to my poor time management—, so I figured this was the best time to finally give it a test. So this will be my first impressions of an apple cider vinegar rinse!
For your reference, a before picture…
Yeah, that’s so not cute. And it had no business getting that bad for so long.
I was way too lazy to put in my usual sesame seed oil pre-poo, so I just went straight for the apple cider vinegar rinse first thing in the morning. Thankfully, I had my hair in a braid for a few days, which leads to way less tangles than if I were to put it in a ponytail or bun.
The usual measurement for an apple cider vinegar rinse is one part vinegar to two parts water. You can adjust depending on your hair texture and length. If your hair is straight or short, use less vinegar; if your hair is curlier and longer, use more vinegar. You can also add essential oils like lavender or rosemary, but it’s totally optional. For the sake of a first impression, I just mixed 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water all together in a spray bottle.
Then, you saturate your hair in the mixture, mainly focusing on massaging as much as possible into your scalp. Make sure you’re wearing a shirt or a towel you don’t care too much about getting smelly. Many use this as a substitute for shampoo, so you really have to go at it to get a deep clean. After saturating your scalp, spray and scrunch the rest of the mix into your ends until you smell like a scrumptious salad. I was actually surprised I got out a few tangles despite not doing my usual oil pre-poo.
After exhausting all the contents in the spray bottle, put up your hair in a loose bun or a plastic cap and let it sit for up to 20 minutes. And then you continue with the rest of your hair routine like normal! You can either start with a gentle shampoo (i.e Shea Moisture) if you really want to get out the smell or go straight into conditioning. I went with the shampoo first since the vinegar is super powerful. And then y’all know the rest.
And here are the results!

This was definitely the monthly deep clean my hair needed for the month. The apple cider vinegar rinse immediately relieved the most intense itchiness and made my hair super light and fluffy. It took another day and some extra leave-in to get back the curl definition, but my hair was easy to manage throughout the week. My scalp got a little itchy again by day 3, but thankfully there were almost no flakes– though I probably could’ve seen more benefits from a brand other than Heinz since I usually see the organic brands for apple cider vinegar rinses.
I know with continued, regular use and reworking into a routine, I will see much better results. Of course with this method, you have to learn to tolerate the smell, and there’s no way around how powerful it is. I know smell is something which can make or break certain products and methods for some people, but after a while, it’s not so bad. The smell takes a couple days to wear out, but unless you have your hair constantly in your face, you don’t really notice it. I’m happily I finally got around to experimenting, and I can’t wait to use it again!

Greetings readers!
So I recently celebrated my one year anniversary of being natural this July (cheers) and I’m so excited about the progress my hair has been making. My main two hair goals when I big chopped were Healthy hair and Length, and my hair has been doing quite well in both areas!
At the beginning of my journey I was a little bit of a product junky: I assumed that what my hair needed…
