Adam S. Messinger - My First Full Length (with d/l code)
So here is a post about how my first full length album was made and the album art behind it. If you want to read commentary about my other releases, you’ll have to dig through the mountains of posts. SPOILERS: …There’s a free download link at the bottom of the page.
It was October or November of 2012 and I had remembered that I promised Jon Barba an album full of the unrecorded Sweaty Fat Kid songs. I had started it in the spring and had totally forgotten about it. So I spent a little more than a week practicing and recording. I cranked out a song a night for about 10 days. I would come home from work and then I’d practice these songs I wrote 2-3 years previously, record them in iTalk, and then mix it in Audacity. It was weird because at that point I didn’t even care about the songs anymore. It was just like an empty reflex and then something happened.
The bass tracks on the album were 5010, Mr. Not-So-Fantastic, Zum, Pastor Jim, Halfmas, and Pappaw. 5010, Mr. Not-So Fantastic, and Pastor Jim were my early attempts at telling a fictional character’s story. Halfmas, Zum, and Pappaw were my early attempts at autobiographical storytelling in song form. Expressing my feelings about real life things is something I’m just now finding out that I’ve not been all that good at when it comes to conversation.
The piano tracks were Idiot (which was my first piano song I ever wrote), We Jumped Over Cows, For Max, Benjamin Jones and Head Exploded. I remember in April I had recorded the piano track for Benjamin Jones and Head Exploded. At shows, I liked to add an interlude that connected the two songs, and I was hoping I would be able to pull this off for the album. I figured I’d have to rerecord it a billion times but as I sat down to do it, I RECORDED IT ALL IN ONE TAKE! I jumped up and down, and ran around the house screaming like a moron. I was pretty happy that it all came out so smoothly on the first try.
With this being a post mortem on my time writing and playing as Sweaty Fat Kid, I figured I’d release it as Sweaty Fat Kid. Some friends still called my music Sweaty Fat Kid, and other knew my music as Adam S. Messinger but no one could really understand that it was two sides of the same coin. It was just this unnecessarily confusing thing. About a week before I put it out, I decided I should move everything under my name (since I was done with the whole Sweaty Fat Kid thing).
I thought it would be cool if I just made the Sweaty Fat Kid a character on the album cover. Maybe on the off chance of it catching on, I decided to incorporate the whole “The Sweaty Fat Kid says…” into the title. I wanted the Everything is Old EP to be the first and this album title to complete it. “Everything is old and the rest of it is here.” I wish I would have had the foresight to just release that EP under my own name. I also wanted the character on the front to look similar to the character on the EP. It created some continuity. Also this is also all in my own head and I doubt ANYONE else saw this. It was all just me being anal.
I did a release show at my house, where I (unsuccessfully) played the album front to back. Regardless, the people that came were super cool and I ended up selling about 10 or 15 copies of it and the initial SFK EP. I took out two of my best friends to get McDonalds with the money. That was pretty fun.
Ultimately, I didn’t really have anymore to say with those songs, and in the downtime between April and November, I was 80% done writing a different album. I’m glad it’s all recorded and people can see the musician I was between 2008-2011. I’m also glad I was able to move on.
