Delmace Mayo is an impressive, 15 year old athlete from Massachusetts. He practices WCMX, track and field, wheelchair racing and adaptive surfing.
Delmace is originally from Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. At birth, he sustained a spinal cord injury which left him completely paralyzed from his waist down. He has been a wheelchair user for all his life.
When Delmace wasn't even a year old, his parents abandoned him and left him at an orphanage for disabled youth. Here, he spent the first years of his life. While he was in the midst of a procedure to become adopted to the USA, Haiti was struck by a severe earthquake. This severely damaged the building where he lived, but it also paved the way for him to come to the USA sooner than expected.
After arriving in Massachusetts, Delmace really started to blossom. He surprised everyone with how fast he was able to settle and with the speed in which he learned English.
Delmace always showed a great interest for all kinds of sports, but especially for those that involve speed and preferably even are a bit risky. This has drawn him to the sport of WCMX(Wheelchair Motocross). For the past 3 years, Delmace has competed at the WCMX World Championships. He placed 3'rd in the Intermediate Division in the first year, and 1'st the past 2 years. His biggest dream is to once compete for Team USA in the Paralympics when he’s older.
Besides WCMX, Delmace also practices wheelchair racing and adaptive surfing, for which he regularly travels to California. Besides his many athletic activities, Delmace plays the violin and loves to spend time with his friends.
