Office machines have gotten a little smaller over time. In this office room of a Craftsman house, visited on 9/30/21, we see a Burroughs adding machine and an Addressograph ‘Graphotype‘ tin label maker.

Address-o-what??

Sometimes while working with records, additional research is needed when you come across something unfamiliar.  This “silver item” resembled a military dog tag, but slightly larger with fluted edges. This mystery item turned out to be a plate for an Addressograph. “An address-o-what?” you might ask.  An Addressograph is a machine that uses plates to print an address, usually onto envelopes. The device changed over time, originally using wood blocks and evolving into metal plates. 

Pictured are an Addressograph plate and printed envelopes which were located while processing employment assistance case files, as well as a 1960s Addressograph machine.
