Here you have the reason why Liam and Sara never could date, and Reyes with a space puppy (As confirmed Dog Person, nobody can convince me the sole reason for the collective to raise adhis is for combat and not bc reyes brain immediately went P U P P Y)
JRT: wondering if the adhi have kaiju blood in them.
Jurassic Park
A little late, but here’s my prompt fill for @makocartwheels Reyes Vidal Weekly Prompt #16!
This is set in the distant future of Santa Sarita, but it is spoiler free!
Reyes wiped at the sweat on his brow and tried not to let his bad mood ruin the whole day. True, he expected better from his operatives, but as far as mistakes went, an escaped adhi was mostly forgivable. That the adhi was the Collective’s prize breeding female, heavy with a litter of pups about to be born, did complicate matters. But what pissed him off most was that it was midday, in the middle of a record-breaking Kadara summer, and he insisted on searching for the adhi personally. “You only have yourself to blame,” he mumbled to himself as he scaled a rocky hill. The adhi breeding program had been Pok’s newest scientific endeavor. The Salarian had spent the last two years researching adhi behavior and genetics in an attempt to find the perfect strain to make the creatures Heleus’ equivalent of dogs. The escaped female was Pok’s pride and joy, the scientist insisted that the adhi would be the mother of all domesticated adhi, the maternal genetics that would pave the way to working and companion adhi in the cluster. Reyes didn’t care about the details so much as Pok’s promise. She was adamant that this litter would be the best, with pups that sought guidance and instruction, that would be trainable. Sara had heard that and turned wide blue eyes on him, shining with eager hope. Of course she wanted one. So, there he was, climbing a small mountain in pursuit of a rogue adhi bitch about to drop a litter of up to fifteen pups, all so he could bring one home. He wanted to be grumpy about it, but imagining Sara’s joy when he brought the pup home made him smile instead. “Found anything?” The high-pitched, thin voice of his lieutenant crackled through his comm. “On the trail,” he said. He grunted as he hauled himself to the top of the hill and wiped at his brow. “She’ll seek out solitude and an escape from the heat,” Pok said. Reyes looked up to find the dark mouth of a cave. This one wasn’t part of the Draullir system, and to the best of his knowledge wasn’t used by his organization. “Tracks lead to a cavern,” he said. “Hopefully, she’s still nesting.” Kalla’s voice was clipped and rushed, like most Salarians he’d known. Except Kallo; the pilot was a regular chatterbox if the topic was of interest to him. “And if she’s not?” He asked as he approached the cavern. “If whelping, adhi could injure or kill pups in response to your perceived threat. If pups are born, mother will be defensive, liable to attack.” There was a pause, and Kalla’s voice took on an earnestness. “Prefer you not kill mother.” “I know, Pok,” Reyes said, rolling his eyes. “Any tips on how to approach her?” “Mishka is clever, raised with agents,” she said. “Will know if your weapon is drawn. Appear small, non-lethal.” “Great,” he grumbled. “Approach the new mother with a mouthful of razors without a weapon. What could go wrong?” “Could kill pups, could injure herself, could injure you,” Pok replied. Reyes sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I’m going in,” he said. “Wish me luck.” “Luck is merely perception of data, statistics much more useful.” “Pok?” “Yes, Boss?” “Get off this channel.” “Yes, Boss.” Blissful silence followed and Reyes focused on the task at hand. He approached the cavern carefully, his steps measured and plotted to avoid needless crunching and the skittering of pebbles. The temperature dropped drastically as he passed into the shadow of the cave’s mouth, and he exhaled with relief. He stood in the entrance and let his eyes adjust to the dimness. The adhi wasn’t in the antechamber, but he thought he heard soft sounds from further back. Reyes ventured further into the cavern, taking great care to keep his movements steady and non-threatening. Adhi had great hearing, and an even better sense of smell; there’d be no hiding his presence from the creature. But, if he was careful enough, he might be able to convince her he wasn’t an enemy. He followed the curving tunnel and paused as the cavern opened up before him. It was a large chamber with jagged outcroppings and natural formations that could provide cover if needed. But that was all useless now. Mishka lay in the center of the cavern, resting in a pool of radiant sunlight. Her tail wrapped around a dozen tiny, squiggling shapes climbing and tumbling over one another. And her cold yellow eyes were locked on Reyes. He took a step closer and her lip raised in a silent snarl, her warning clear.
