I have really bad claustrophobia and usually end up having panic attacks if it gets dark because it makes it hard to see how big the room is. My gf's little brother decided it would be a good idea to lock me in a dark closet. (Gf tore into him afterwards and point blankly refuses to let him interact with me now, which is nice. I really don't want to know what would happen if he knew I had a similarly severe fear of clowns...)

I've been doing this and I wonder if it's ableism? My best freind and I joke about my disabilities all the time but if someone else says the exact thing that my best freind says we both get upset at the person is this wrong? Cause it just feels like when we do it it's fun and we don't mean anything by it but when a stranger does it it feels rude and like they are being dicks on purpose

That's not wrong. It's your disability.

You can joke about it all you want and a lot of the time humor can be used to cope, but it's not ok if a stranger jokes about it since you do not know their intentions and they probably do not have a clear understanding of your disability.

It's kind of like how someone would make fun of themselves or make jokes at their own expence but it's not okay when someone is makes fun of them.

A teacher last year, after going over my 504 plan: "Ok, but what are /you/ going to do to help yourself?" (He was also really shitty at actually following it and was generally kind of a dick)

Translation: "It is only your job to acomodate yourself. If you need help for your disability than it's your fault for not helping yourself."~admincam
