You know, in high school, and even freshman year in college, I was a big "color-blind" proponent.
They used to do an exercise with us, where we'd have to split the room based on questions asked. In silence. Yes's over here, no's over there kind of thing. Good exercise for divisive topics by the way. Learn a lot about your people.
Anyway the question was "Is race real?"
I practically ran to the "no" side.
At the time, I said in my head "Race is a social construct. To be able to conquer racial tension, we simply have to realize it isn't a factor anymore, and move forward."
I really felt that was the right answer. I thought I was doing good. I thought everyone on the "race is real" side was living in some fantasy land where DNA was your skin color and Newton's fourth law was "God made minorities" or something. I thought it was tragic how racism had been so thorough, it had even convinced it's victims of it's merits, and that racial tension would just pendulum back and forth forever unless someone stopped it by forgiving and forgetting.
Goddamn it hurts to think how many struggling people were on the other side of that line silently thinking "goddamn not only do you not know my culture and my stuggle, you don't even think it's real? What am I imagining it?" Racism isn't answered by "everyone close your eyes." There's too much disgusting racist shit going on to close your eyes. Open your eyes. Race is real.
