PRIMARCH ADRIEN VICTUS can’t really explain it. There’s not a lot to explain, ultimately. One minute he’s on Menae barking orders in the frontlines, the next he’s holed up in some ancient turian-human hybrid ship buffing out his political image. The Commander of said ship is even more confusing. JANE SHEPARD lumbers around with a chip on her shoulder, dressed completely inappropriately—but he’s not one to make remarks on someone else’s vessel.
When she’d extracted him he’d noticed the mouth on her, even had to go as far as to correct it, reminding her exactly who she was talking to. Even scolded she was unwavering, and it’s an interaction Adrien cannot stop thinking about. He tosses and turns in his quarters, lying awake pondering the great Commander Shepard. As she’d check in more and more, he’d find he’d overanalyze their conversations. He’d give her a completely professional report, only to end it with some personal anecdote or emotion he’s experiencing. It’s demeaning. During the Tuchanka incident, he’d actually felt a real consequence of her judgement when he admitted the turian bomb existed. A strange, hollow feeling caved in his chest. He’s a leader, he’s used to having to be the bad guy, but he felt real shame looking into her eyes and confessing to an attempted act of terrorism even though she’s not his superior, and handled the situation objectively.
She keeps interesting friends. Her circle is made up of all walks of life, with the unlikeliest of alliances. GARRUS VAKARIAN is among her closest, and yet he’s seen getting along with the krogan, Wrex of Clan Urdnot. Apparently, Shepard has a rare uniting kind of quality to her. So as to maintain their delicate professional relationship, Adrien does not pry into their history, but it makes him dangerously curious.
At one point, he’d be certain he made a fool of himself. Clearing his throat, adjusting a crease in his uniform, using anything as an excuse to fiddle just so he could get the words out. Awkward, and clunky, he fights to ask, “How about coffee? Hrm—sometime.”
Cautiously, Shepard peers up from the datapad she’d been scrolling through, side-eyeing him to gauge his meaning. Instead of trusting her wary instincts, she’s polite in accepting. “That sounds… fine, but maybe after this whole thing passes? You know?” Vaguely her hand gestures to around the room in a whip, it’s obvious her priority is the Genophage and Adrien’s reminded that that’s where his focus should remain too. However, he notes the informal response being a positive sign, as if she’s warming up to him.
“Of course—ahem—yes.”
Shepard nods respectfully, and exits the war room.
He doesn’t really know what he wants to do with her. The puzzle pieces of it all just won’t fit to give him a clear picture. There’s this urge to be close to her, to… impress her—although that desire never compromises his integrity.
Days pass with little time to share between the two of them, but comes to respect and admire her in new ways. The way she handles conflicts without blind cruelty, and her belligerent knack for peacemaking, it’s all fascinating to watch albeit juxtaposing. Underneath the hard shell is a strategist with a soft heart. He can see how her subordinates trust her, gravitate towards her. Hell, even Vakarian had vouched for her personally.
All too soon, it’s time for his exit from the vessel. It’s a melancholy affair, having grown used to the odd sort of warmth in the environment.
“It was an honor to have you aboard, Primarch. I’m sure we’ll see each other again.” Shepard tells him, and he’s come to understand that she never says anything she does not mean. It’s words that he cherishes, a heat blooming in his chest as he shakes the hand she offers. Even her handshakes are tough but fair, and he finds himself coming to rest his palm atop the meat of her thumb. It’s an inappropriate gesture, and while he experiences some shame for it, Shepard is unperturbed, nodding to him. It bolsters him, steeling himself through it.
“I hope so, Commander. We all stand behind you on this.” he replies, and he questions his phrasing, leaving it unspoken that he alone wants to support her endeavors. She presses her lips together, seemingly unable to respond as she retracts to take her leave. In a flash of poor judgment, his eyes glance down and fly up just as quickly. The last thing a turian Primarch needs to be doing is checking out a human commander working alongside him in a war of all things. Once again, he asks himself what he would even do with a human.
It’s this very confusion that drives him to secure one more meeting with the Commander before he’s dropped off. Even though they’ve already exchanged their pleasant goodbyes, he simply is compelled to stay, as if his feet won’t carry him off the boarding ramp. The captain’s cabin has a fair bit of privacy to it for good reason, and his skin prickles at the notion he’s in proximity to the place she sleeps. He approaches the door, and alarms blare in his head to leave at once—what he’s doing right now is so highly unusual that he can’t bear the thought of actually going through it. Yet here he stands, his hand reaching to the pad to hail her to open it.
As his talon nears, the familiar sound of the door sliding open interrupts him, nearly jumping clean out of his skin about it. He’s met with Officer Vakarian… on his way out.
The sound of easy conversation dies out. “Oh, Primarch.” he greets with unmistakable surprise to his tone, evidenced by how he disrespectfully drops the last name of Adrien’s full title. The Primarch’s countenance shifts in a subtle frown, disturbed by his findings, unable to break his own shocked silence. Garrus’s subvocals are particularly damning, conveying he’s just been caught in a compromising position as he stands paralyzed and waiting for some kind of cue. Gone is his armor, replaced by turian civvies that look thrown on. Adrien’s never noticed his height before now.
Shepard—Shepard—pops her head in view, brows knit together at the prospect of a guest so deeply unexpected. “Primarch.” she parrots dumbly, and there’s an electricity introduced to the air that Adrien wishes he could quite literally catapult himself outside of. “I mean, er, Primarch Victus. What can I do for you?” she inquires with obvious bewilderment, as well as the unease that comes from her privacy being breached. As she steps fully into sight, it’s plain to see her attire does not resemble a uniform in the slightest. In fact, the garment hugs her tightly in a way that has him shifting in place uncomfortably. Another observation that makes him sick to his stomach is the dishevelment of the Commander’s hair, her flushed skin. It’s clear what transpired between them mere moments ago, a rather happy reunion he must be ruining right now.
Garrus watches warily between the two, forcing himself to break the silence by clearing his throat. “Uh, I’ll see you, Shepard.” Hastily excusing himself by skirting around Victus like a lovesick boy descending a window after sneaking in. It’s the kind of thing that has Adrien twitching his nose. A pause passes between them, and when Shepard opens her mouth to speak again, he’s swift to end it.
“It seems I’ve caught you at a bad time. I’ll leave you.” he says, and he notices he’s talking to her like they just met. It’s firm, uncompromising. He folds his arms behind his back like a military man, and bows his head in respect before departing.
