Join Me In A Drink
Please allow me to make you a drink. A seasonal beverage, a musical Christmas cocktail if you will. I'm calling it Self Indulgence, because it's made of tunes that I like.
I'm not a member of any religious group, I keep the unknown to myself. But I do rather like this Thomas Paine quote,
"The World is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion".
However, I can appreciate that religion has influenced humanity to make some real good music, and as an ex-hedonist and commited party animal, I also like the influence that Christmas celebrations have had on popular music. Therefore, I'm just going to choose one classical piece, Winter Night (Sleigh Ride) by Frederick Delius, Royal Scottish Orchestra - David Lloyd-Jones

When I was little, my family and I used to cram ourselves into my nan and grandad's tiny bungalow. My grandad was a pianist and my great uncle sung old songs. The following tunes make me think of this time.
Christmas Night in Harlem - Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra with Jack Teagarden, trombone; Johnny Mercer, vocals

and, Dont Wait 'Til the Night Before Christmas · Dick Robertson

Also, yonks ago when I was about 10, I sang at my school's carol service. My favourite tune was.....Veni, Veni Emmanuel - The Gesualdo Six

Personally, I think the best Christmas songs are pop songs. I like all the usual ones like Last Christmas (Wham), Fairy Tale Of New York (Pogues & Kirsty McColl), Wonderful Christmas Time (Wings) etc. but I just thought I'd post two. The first because it was from a time when I used to be a delivery driver and I could not wait to get back home.
Chris Rea ~ Driving Home For Christmas

and the second, because of the the exceedingly funky Tracy Wormworth bass line, I don't hear it that often and because it's SOOOOO DAMN PARTAY.....
The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping

Have great Christmas! - David Pulsford, guest editor - @lesser-known-composers
