This week I’m at the International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centers’ Annual Conference in New Zealand (because my job is cool and involves things like this). We’re celebrating 70 years of peacekeeping and as part of the welcome reception at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, attendees experienced a pōwhiri, which I learned is a traditional Māori ceremony to formally welcome guests. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I learned some new things today and I suspect this is ultimately the reason why traveling is good for one‘s perspective of the world. Frühlingsfest in April marks the beginning of a wonderful 8 month period in Stuttgart where there is a fest of sorts almost every other month. It is my *favorite* time of year. Hooray! We made it through 365 days of marital bliss! Here is the story of how we celebrated this momentous occasion. We opened the bottle of champagne that @hattiedm123 gifted us last spring during her visit to Stuttgart and proceeded to drink it as we walked to our dinner reservation. This is because we are classy. We ate dinner at this cute little Italian restaurant that we like and drank a delightful bottle of Barolo. While slightly inebriated both from the booze and our love for each other, we drunk texted a few people to come over to our apartment for a celebratory brunch the next morning even though we had no food in the house. We still pulled it off with flying colors and then drank #roseallday with some friends. Solid first anniversary execution; we think we are doing a great job.
