November Daily Writing Challenge Day 7 - Endless
Follow-up to Xylaes’s story here!
“Do I want to…go with you and a mercenary team to the Dragon Isles…?” Garren looked absolutely flabbergasted at the question that just came out of his father’s mouth. He had barely left Teldrassil when he lived there, and then never left Moonglade when living in the refugee camps. Going to Dalaran on a whim was just about the most daring thing he had ever done. What would his mother or grandparents say?! And now, here Xylaes was, asking him to go to these new lands as a part of a mercenary team.
It was so…taboo.
His idea of a mercenary likely did not fit the reality. In his mind, they were these teams of grizzled, old people that took the dirty jobs no one else wanted to do and just killed and stole without remorse. Okay, so maybe it was partially accurate of SOME mercenary groups, but that wasn’t the type he was being invited into. Most of these people sounded like military veterans that had retired and wanted to keep helping out in some manner; a very noble cause.
It wasn’t as if he were without any skill should the need to defend himself arise. He had his mother’s natural talent with a bow and arrow, and had proven to be a crack shot with it, winning a variety of school competitions back in the day. He also possessed some skill in arcane magic, something he had more recently learned he received from his father. Not that he had ever had to use these skills in a war setting, but he was assured that he would be kept far away from any of that.
It was a frightening thought, doing something so far outside of his comfort zone. Then again, he had never done something like this before, maybe he would enjoy it? Maybe it would help him to find his purpose in life, because working as a stock boy in a shop was certainly not it. Endless questions ran through his mind, yet instead of asking he just remained silent and stared into his hot chocolate in bewilderment. He wasn’t afraid to ask them, he was afraid that if he started doing so, he would talk himself out of saying yes.
“....Yes…?” It didn’t sound very convincing, but he managed to at least get it out there.
“Was that a question?”
“No…I mean yes! I mean…yes I think I would like to go.”
