how would you describe phil's voice? I'm writing about protest musicians and i've really only heard about 3 of his songs, so i don't feel i've explored all his vocal styles and i'm struggling on how to put his sound into words. could you help?

Wow, I just got this, I hope this hadn’t been sitting in my inbox for too long. I apologize if it has, I never received a notification for it.

I am not a a person with professional musical experience, but I will give it a try. I think Phil Ochs had a beautiful singing voice, with a keening quality to it, which also had a lot of vibrato. He hits high notes a lot, which I would say is comparable to Baez, because she does high notes a whole lot as well. Some have described Ochs’ voice as “nasally”, which, while it technically is, but I consider it nasally in a pleasant way. 

I don’t believe he was ever technically trained, sort of like Sandy Denny, who also wasn’t technically trained either, but also, in my opinion, had a beautiful voice. Anyway, Phil Och’s voice is not a voice that would necessarily be universally loved, some of his detractors consider that his weakest feature as an artist and that his songwriting was better, but since I’m biased, I do love him as both a songwriter and singer.

Oh, and I think he was a tenor. Like I mentioned, since he had a lot of vibrato, it was something he used to be self-conscious about. That’s why in his first two albums, it’s sort of repressed until In Concert. Then it goes into full force during Pleasures of the Harbor and beyond, until the incident in Africa in 1973. 

Biography-wise, he got mugged, and Ochs felt the muggers went out of their way to damaging his vocal chords, which put out the top three notes of his vocal range. Ochs suspected that the attack was arranged by CIA. Which isn’t something to be dismissed, since after his death, a 500 page FBI file got released to the public with over half of the sections blacked out. He was surveillanced throughout most of his adult life. So, yeah, the attack and mugging really messed him up, because the damage of his voice frustrated him, and it worsened his mental health.

Finally, I think, the way he used his voice, conveyed a lot of emotional range and sincereity. I find his singing very comforting, personally.

am i the only one who dislikes the term poc/woc? i mean, for a start, the term 'coloured' in america carries the negative connotations from segregation and slavery, and doesn't the dividing up of people into 'white' and 'non-white' just erase the whole spectrum of colour available?

Yea not a fan. I prefer the use of majority/minority since its more accurate and can easily catagorize things. For example somebody can be a racial minority but in their country their race could hold majority political and economic power. The typical discourse of Poc oppression has trouble covering this and is almost always American centric in world view.
