Regarding my works being reposted to Facebook and other platforms:
I was informed earlier today that someone had taken screenshots of AfOAfH and had reposted them to their Facebook group in order to share it with others. With the help of a new fan of mine, I was able to go to the page itself and see it.
Now, when it comes to reposting my fic like that, and spreading it around, I do have some things to say on that, primarily...
Do it. I’m being one-hundred percent serious here, do it, I seriously do not mind.
With that being said, I would really appreciate it if you could keep a few things in mind when you do it.
I would really appreciate it if you tell me what you want to do with the fic before you do it. I am almost never going to say no, I’ve received different requests from people who wanted to write their own spin-offs, translations, though spreading it to a new site is not something I have gotten an actual request for. I understand the importance of spreading word of mouth in fan communities and if my fic is something you felt was so great that you had to share it to the world, more power to you.
The singular biggest reason I want to know where exactly my fic is going to end up is because I live and thrive off of hearing feedback. I know it takes a metric ass load of time between chapters for stuff to come out, and that’s because I spend a lot of time planning things out. And much of the things that I have received universal praise for came as a result of suggestions of constructive criticism. Ideally, I would like to know what every single one of my users thinks, but barring that I’d like to get as many opinions as possible. It’s no coincidence that my fic has significantly increased in quality between the first chapter and the latest, and I would like to continue that trend as long as I am writing.
Also, if you’re going to repost or otherwise utilize my works, please credit me by name and post a link (preferably an AO3 link) to my fic. A lot of people will be seeing this for the first time, and while it is nice that people tend to be upfront about it not being theirs, it still would be nice if I was actually credited.
I’m going to be honest, I know more people who are genuinely unaware that I was the author to my own fic. And while it is a little heartwarming to see someone so surprised and excited to meet the author to a moderately popular fic (despite the fact they’ve probably been talking to them for anywhere between a week to multiple months), it also gets very exhausting and kind of annoying at times.
Now, when it comes to links, using either my AO3 or FFnet links to the relevant chapters are okay, but I would recommend using AO3 links. I go out of my way to answer every new comment when I post a new chapter, and I think a lot of my readers really appreciate that I try to keep an open dialogue with them.
And finally...
Keep in mind that not everyone will be as happy to have their works spread around like I am. I know many people who downright oppose any sort of reposting of their works to other platforms. They have their own reasons, and while I am more than happy to let people do what they want, some people may view it as an insult or an act of theft. So please, do keep in mind that you need to run this by the author before you do it. Even if not for moral reasons, do it because it could potentially get you in trouble with whoever runs the platform, or because if it’s from someone with a dedicated fan base, you may end up getting harassed or flooded with angry responses from even angrier fans. It’s not worth the risk.
Alright, I know this was a pretty long post, but that’s all I really have to say on the matter. If you’re a fan of mine, you’ll be very pleased to know I am still working hard on the next chapter, and it will be out soon. I hope all of you have a great rest of the day!
