“WORLDS COLLIDE”

Bisco Smith and Afrika_47

Artist, photographer, and filmmaker Ralph Ziman, aka Afrika 47 lives with his family in Los Angeles, but he’s originally from South Africa and deeply concerned with the arms trade and role of guns in many cultures across Africa. For a recent show, Ghosts, Ziman had fake AK-47s, a gun he refers to as an “incredibly iconic weapon that is loved, revered and fetishized in Africa” made from wire and beads and then photographed Ethiopian Mursi warriors holding the guns just as if they were the real thing. When C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice, California exhibited a show of incredibly powerful collaborative works he did with contemporary graffiti and lettering artist Bisco Smith, Ziman was able to draw from his Ghosts images. To promote the collaborative show, Worlds Collide, Bisco Smith and Afrika 47 combined their talents to paint this wall on the side of the Snapchat.com headquarters at Pacific Ave. and Market St. just steps from Venice Beach. @afrika_47 @biscosmith @cavegalleryphotos
