A fundraiser in nature, the Afro Renaissance Ball supports the Konjo Isizwe Academy in their dedication to the mental, social, and physical development of young minds of the diaspora. We aim to showcase talent, skill, and ingenuity in all aspects of life, to remind ourselves that education is stimulation, and that these individuals presenting to you, are but a preview of what one can achieve.Stay tuned to our Facebook page for more information and updates on additional sponsors, contests, prizes and activities taking place at the Afro Renaissance Ball. This is an event that you do not want to miss.
Konjo Isizwe Academy is an African Centered, Vegan, Accelerated Learning independent school in Brooklyn.
About Konjo Isizwe Academy Konjo Isizwe Academy started as a Homeschool Cooperative and is now transitioning from that model to more of a Brick & Mortar operation. Our students ages range from 2 - 6 years old. We currently have 3 class levels; the classrooms are grouped by level and not by age. The school day opens at 8:00am. Breakfast is at 8:30amSchool wide "Circle Time" is at 9:00am and class officially begins at 9:30am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and ThursdaysMondays and Fridays are less academically rigid days, including more games and play in learning. Also, this is when most of the science experiments, projects and other subjects are done.
Konjo Isizwe is African-centered: Among other topics, the top class has learned the topography and geography of 13 East African Nations and now they've started on Central Africa. Last Semester, the whole school learned very basic history of the Ashanti, as well as the Original cultures of modern day Egypt. We do our best to make sure the imagery seen and ideas are expressed to our students are reflective, and/or inclusive, of who they are. Last year, several notable American Black inventors and creators were taught and discussed. Our top class can all read and write, and are currently moving into multiplication as they are already skilled in multiple digit addition and subtraction.
We are vegan, for our health and our environment: We do not attend zoos or circuses that feature animals. We recycle and compost everything and use reusable bags, paper towels and napkins to truly impart onto the students that ideally, nothing is trash. And trash never goes away. We have a vegan chef that prepares meals at least 3 days a week. All meals are fresh (almost no packaged foods) and no meals contain processed sugar (sugar as an ingredient). An emphasis on weekly nutritional variety is adhered. The children know what they are eating.
We practice an Accelerated Learning methodology because we have seen the success of those coming before us (the Freedom Home Academy and others) and are aware that our children can learn far more than we generally give them when placed in an environment that is stimulating, engaging, and loving. We operate out of the homes of 2 host families, both of which are in Flatbush (7 blocks away from each other). We are currently wrapping up the closing process for a new building on Nostrand and Willoughby and are holding our first annual black tie fundraiser on May 5 called, the Afro Renaissance Ball, in the new space.
