Greek mythology talks about and centers women A LOT, that’s not to say there wasn’t a lot of misogyny in some their portrayal but that doesn’t mean they were completely shafted and erased like some of these retellings claim. To insist that they were (especially without properly researching beforehand) is ignorant at best and appropriation at worse.

Nearly every single woman in Perseus’s story is treated with way more humanity and complexity that retellings give them credit for, Aganippe, Danaë and her nurse, Clymene, Athena, Andromeda, Cassiopeia and even the gorgons and nereids are all so damn interesting and they all do something important to push the narrative but retellings will have you believe they were all ignored in mythology and need to be fixed.

Euripides and the Myth of Perseus Two Lost Greek Tragedies Illuminated by a New Papyrus Patrick Finglass

So there were recently discovered papyrus (this book was published last year) that I only recently learned about and it was a summary of several plays by Euripides and 2 are of Dictys and Danaë (as shown in the screenshot) the Dictys summary doesn’t give us much but the Danaë summary is making me LOSE IT

What do you mean Aganippe was actually trying help Danaë??? What do you mean she tricked Acrisius into believing that Perseus was his son??? What do you mean that Aganippe and Danaë are actually active characters in their own story instead of hapless victims???

Bruh… if even for a short moment, that Acrisius thought that Perseus was his son… do you think he held the baby in his arms? Do you think he felt paternal affection for the child destined to kill him without even realizing it? That holding that child softened his heart and was part of why he decided to free Danaë? His first child? But even in what is supposed to be a happy moment his paranoia got the better of him so he sent a loyal servant to investigate Danaë’s prison and find out she was the actual mother? So he wasn’t just sending him daughter and the child he has no affection for to their deaths, but he’s sending two of his own children. God… Euripides your mind.
