i'm going to college in a few months and i don't know if i should get a professional diagnosis. I've been tested & the psych pretty much confirmed that i have adhd & i could get one if it became necessary. i need a professional diagnosis to get accommodations but i don't know what accommodations i'll need or if disclosing a diagnosis will open me up to ableism/discrimination from the faculty or future employers (i mean it's not SUPPOSED to but we all know how that goes). can anybody give advice?
I think that disclosing at college/university is more like you go to the disability services office and tell them and then you tell the professors who you need accommodations from, if they need to know (like if you have test accommodations and stuff like that). Since I wasn’t diagnosed when I went to university I can’t really talk about this from experience.
Regardless, I would recommend talking to your psych and asking for documentation that indicates that you likely have ADHD and what kinds of accommodations would be beneficial. Then if you decide you need accommodations, you will already have the paperwork on hand.
