During the heritage walk organised by @madrasinherited a man may be in his late 60’s approached us and asked if we would be interested in touring his house which is nearly 150 years old. About five generations have lived in this very house that is situated in Triplicane’s Agraharam. My burning curiosity made me ask him many questions: 1. Are you Iyengars or Iyers? (I really don’t care about the case but it was just for the sake of history) Ans. No, we are Yadavas (descended from Yadu, a mythical king). We worship Krishna. 2. How many family members currently live here? And. Four of us. My family comprises of 2 sons. One works in Chennai. One is short of hearing and he is studying. 3. Do you own this house or are you tenants? Ans. We own this house. However, we have been paying a small amount to Parthasarathy temple as the land is not ours. The amount was far higher back in the days. Now, it’s just a mere token of appreciation. And we do a lot of service at the temple. 4. Do you think there is any privacy considering all the houses are built close together? Ans. This is more like joint family. There is nothing to hide. We all know each other fairly well. That’s probably the best part of living in an agraharam. We live a contented life. We are happy. God is there is to take care of us. . Second picture: This is a service area. All the vessels and clothes are washed. . Third picture: Entrance of the house. Old cycles are kept and as you see are unused for a long time. . Evolution of Agraharam: In earlier times, a grant of land or gifts was given to Brahmins. Such a gift was given by Kings and members of the royal family for the sustenance of the Brahmins and their families. Using these, the Brahmins built a series of simple houses to live in. These houses or Agraharam were built on either side of the road around the temples, such that it looked like open-ended garland around the temple. Thus the name Haram or garland. A reference to the existence of such houses occurs even in the 3rd Century Sangam Literature texts called Perumpanarruppatai. . #agraharam #chennai #triplicane #heritagewalk #history #houses #vintage (at Triplicane, Tamil Nadu, India) https://www.instagram.com/pritishsocial/p/Buz89t8BcIA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19rxmlvvlnsj9
My penchant for doors continues. Here are some photos of doors from the Triplicane Agraharam. Many doors and windows in the Triplicane Agraharam are made of Rosewood. Excellent seasoning, good quality timber, good workmanship and adequate maintenance has proved fruitful for the builders as not many windows or doors have been replaced due to damage/ deterioration. The accessories used in the windows and doors are unclear, but the hardware is still functioning. Occassionally, occupants change the hardware / accessories. Most of the houses have retained their period look, with their wooden pillars surrounding the courtyard, hick wooden doors with brass knobs, carved lintels and cavernous lofts. The loft in some houses is so long that it spans two rooms, making the loft seem like the first floor of the house. Some of the houses have been influenced by Portuguese, Danish and Greek architecture, thanks to the settlers who entered the city decades ago. . #agraharam #doors #architecture #chennai #stories #PritishSocial #design #houses #instamoment #triplicane #oldhouses #olddoors #vintage #interiordesign #exteriordesign #portuguese #danish #greek #india (at Triplicane, Tamil Nadu, India) https://www.instagram.com/pritishsocial/p/Bv5gZ_tB7co/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=oc7jgazhl5m2
This is taken in 2019. People living here have been asked to move elsewhere. The houses have been demolished. Something is coming up soon here. Check out my instastories of a photo taken at this very place many years ago. A couple standing in front of their house and posing for a picture. . On a side note: Residents here say in the last 50 years the character of the Triplicane agraharam has changed. Here too, the rent collected is used for the temple upkeep. “The land belongs to the temple. My mother-in-law became the first tenant and paid a rent of Rs. 45,” said a resident, who has been living there for the past 18 years. The Triplicane agraharam has been in existence for over 60 years. . #chennai #chennaidiaries #agraharam #triplicane #blackandwhitephotography #blackandwhite #instamoment #building #ruins .
