[ I’m sorry that I’m very distracted right now. ] signs Talcott, squatting to rest on his haunches so that he’s eye-level with the child. Besides the genuine remorse on his face, Aideen may notice how hard he’s clenching his jaw, and how tight-lipped and hesitant he is right now.
[ Don’t tell anyone about this, not even your Da nor Big Sister Iris, alright? ] Only once Aideen affirms her promise to do so, the young man opens up through slow and slightly unsteady hand gestures, sighing heavily through flared nostrils. [ I get like this now and again. Lately, more than I wish. ] He taps the lobe of his right ear with a tiny grimace. [ I can’t hear on this side anymore, but I can still hear this constant ringing. And sometimes it gets loud enough and annoying that it gets hard for me to focus. Sometimes it also hurts, and it lasts incredibly long. ]
Like just a few moments ago, when it took an entire minute for Talcott to finally realize that Aideen’s been trying to get his attention. Over the years he’s learned how to compose his features and posture in order to feign a relaxed or uninterested demeanor despite the problems the tinnitus is giving him, though he didn’t mean to totally ignore his favourite companion.
[ Not to worry, though. It will go away soon, I’m sure. ] A smile, small but genuine, makes its ways onto pallid face in hopes of erasing the worried look on Aideen. He even makes sure to playfully ruffle her hair. [ I guess I just need to rest some more. Would you like to join me for some hot cocoa? ]
