Evie was anxious, and she didn’t know why. It was an ordinary evening in Cedar Cove, the weather still pleasant enough that they could have the window open to let in a fresh breeze; it tousled her hair, gently fanning the strands across her glasses. She drew in a deep breath, trying to calm the dancing nerves in her stomach.
Nearby, a door creaked gently open. Aiden padded back into the living room, a sliver of light from the hallway softening the darkness of the quiet bedroom he’d left behind.
‘Luna’s settled,’ he said quietly. ‘She rather politely insisted that we read the bat one twice.’ Chuckling, he tucked a handful of picture books back into the bookshelf beside the tv. He glanced over his shoulder when Evie didn’t say anything in response, and his eyebrows drew together.
‘What’s wrong?’ he said, eyes darting over her expression. ‘Can I help?’
Evie hadn’t even mentioned she was anxious! And she was pretty it wasn’t showing on her face that much. He must have just been able to feel it, sense that something was off.
Despite her worry, she smiled. There was something so comforting about being known so intimately, about being loved so deeply that he just knew.
I really won the husband jackpot, Evie thought.
‘Just having an off day, I guess.’ Opening her arms when he came to her, Evie buried her face in the warmth of Aiden’s neck, breathing in the scent of his skin and the faintest lingering trace of lavender — one of Luna’s plushies had a little scent pack inside. It was meant to help soothe anxious toddlers and help them fall asleep. ‘You’re the best plushie,’ she mumbled, her face smooshed into Aiden’s skin.
‘Huh?’ Breathing a laugh, he gave her a little squeeze. ‘Come cuddle. We can watch a show you like, maybe that will help you feel a little better.”
‘I’d like that.’
They settled together on the couch, Evie sinking down into Aiden’s side, his fingers tracing over her bicep. He’d been showing more noticeably lately. His shirt had ridden up just enough to show the lower curve of his belly, and Evie slid a warm palm against his bump, cradling it lovingly, smoothing her hand back and forth.
She snuggled down to rest her cheek near her hand, greeting the baby quietly and just talking to them about whatever for a few minutes; how her day had gone, a funny story about Luna trying to wear a pair of her shoes, how she’d seen the most adorable little orange cat sleeping on their front porch earlier that week.
A few minutes of being near to Aiden, his hand tracing gentle circles on her arm, talking to the baby in a low murmur, Evie was feeling a lot better. It was easier to breathe when she was near to him. She didn’t have that tightness in her chest so much anymore.
It was so very easy to love him.
The credits were rolling when Evie heard a little “mrow?” from the open window. It was that little orange cat again! He was barely more than a kitten, really, poking his little nose inside and peering around. Aiden smiled when he saw him.
‘Hi there, cutie!’ Aiden stretched out a hand over the back of the couch; the cat gave it a tentative sniff. ‘Its okay, you can come inside.’
His wide eyes glanced back and forth, whiskers twitching as it sniffed the air.
‘Aww, you look hungry little guy!’ He could probably smell the lingering scents of dinner, Evie thought. The leftovers were still cooling on the counter. Evie hopped up and fished a few pieces of chicken from the fettucine Aiden had been craving — the cat ate them happily, licking Evie’s fingers with its little raspy tongue.
By the time she’d washed her hands and put the leftovers away, the cat was cautiously investigating the objects on the side table. She returned to the couch in time to see it dunk a curious paw right into Aiden’s half-drunk mug of peppermint tea.
‘Ah, don’t— !’ Aiden grunted, half-amused, half-annoyed. ‘Good thing that had cooled down already.’
The kitty flicked its paw, scattering little droplets of tea onto the side table.
Evie grabbed the mug. ‘Here, there’s more in the pot. I’ll pour you another one.’
She kissed the top of Aiden’s head, pausing to scratch the doofy little orange behind the ears on her way.
The orange cat visited all throughout the next week. By this point, Aiden had taken to leaving a little bowl of kibble on the porch beside a bowl of water, so the cat could eat and drink as it pleased.
Tuesday, it had been brave enough to venture all the way inside, exploring beneath the beds and bookshelves, winding its way behind the tv cabinet; sitting next to Aiden on the couch and chewing the cable when he’d gone to set his pregnancy headphones on his belly to play the baby some classical music.
Last night, the cat had snuggled up with Evie while she’d been reading a book on male pregnancy, and birth following a womb transplant procedure, her worries eating at her again.
Inspired by the gentle, rumbling purrs from the sweet kitty on her lap, Evie had started to whisper all her worries to him. How she feared she might have pushed Aiden into the pregnancy because of her own feelings; how she worried about somehow othering Luna or developing a bias for the biological baby on the way; whether the baby would be ostracised and bullied by their peers when they went to school, purely for the way they’d come into the world.
‘And I know Aiden would want me to talk to him about all of this,’ she’d told the cat, quietly, ‘but he’s already got so much weight on his mind. …And on his hips, to be fair.’
Despite her anxiety, she’d smiled. ‘His beautiful, beautiful hips. Have you ever seen hips so pretty? And his thighs, oh wow! And don’t even get me started on his perfect, totally caked up, delicious—’
There was a snort from the other side of the room as Aiden strolled in. ‘Are you turning the cat into a pervert?’ he teased.
Evie had gasped in mock-offense. ‘No perverts here! Just a couple of distinguished, fine ass —uh— fine art connoisseurs.’
He’d responded by grinning, and hauling her up into a slow dance.
Today, the cat played a game with Evie, dashing back and forth, skittering and pouncing after an old shoelace she’d fished out of the junk drawer. His tiny claws scrabbled on the tile when he zoomed out of the lounge and into the kitchen; Luna squealed and clapped her hands to see him clumsily dashing around the house.
Finally, he made it back onto the carpet and regained his footing, and, wiggling his butt, locked on to the shoelace. His pupils dilated. His butt gave one more targeting wiggle. Then; pounce!
He overshot the mark and bounded headfirst into the couch.
‘Oh my gosh,’ Evie laughed, responding with of a meow of her own when the cat told her “prr-row!” as if to say, “oops! I’m okay!’
Luna stuck her head under the couch, curious where the kitty had gone exploring.
‘He has been really good with Luna,’ Aiden said, a thoughtful tilt to his head as their daughter squealed with laughter. ‘Even when she tried to grab his fur earlier. No hissing, no scratching. We could… look at adopting him, maybe?’
Evie gasped. ‘Oh, I’d love to keep him! I don’t know how we have lived together for so long and we don’t even have a cat yet!’
Aiden has always been a cat person, Evie thought fondly. And I know he’s been missing Meowzart! I know I miss seeing Daisy every day.
Daisy was such a doofus. Whenever Evie’d had a bad day at Berry High, she could always count on coming home to one of Dad’s terrible jokes and Daisy doing something goofy to cheer her up. Pets really were a part of the family, no doubt about it.
Evie tried to imagine how it would have felt if someone had decided to just… keep Daisy as their own one day. It would have sucked!
‘No… no, we can’t,’ Evie said, sighing. ‘We’ve got to try and get this kitty back to their rightful owners.’
Disappointed, Aiden pressed his lips into a flat line and nodded. ‘Yeah, you’re right. I’ll swing by the vet in the morning, see if this little one has a microchip.’
They looked at one another for a moment, wistful expressions on each of their faces, as the kitty squeaked a meow.
Grinning, Evie dangled the shoelace below the front of the couch, whipping it back and forth. A cute little paw darted out to bat at it, followed by a cheeky, upside-down cat face.
‘Okay, we might have to give you up,’ she said, ‘but there’s nothing stopping us getting our play and cuddle fix tonight!’
‘I heard back from the vet clinic,’ Aiden told Evie as she made her way back into the house, juggling the shopping, the diaper bag, Luna's jacket, and her house keys in one hand, pushing the stroller with the other.
Already on her feet, Luna darted forward to hug Aiden around the legs. He greeted her warmly.
‘Yeah?’ Evie waved Aiden off when he stepped forward to help her with her many bags — or maybe he was just setting closer to admire her arms, she thought, grinning a little. He knew she’d have no problem carrying a measly load like this! ‘What did they say?’
‘They said he couldn’t be any more than 6 months old, and that, yes, he was microchipped. They are doing a general health check-up, bath, and flea treatment and stuff now.’ Aiden paused for dramatic effect, while Evie dumped the last of her bags onto the counter.
He held his silence while they made sure Luna was sorted; she was fascinated by the set of shiny, colourful building blocks that Evie had just bought her. As soon as they were out of the bag, she’d found a sparkly blue one and started chewing on it.
Little one occupied for the time being, and satisfied the block was huge and in no way a choking hazard, Evie gave Aiden a curious nudge, prompting him to continue.
He tried to bite back a smile. ‘They contacted his original family with the information on the microchip. He was an indoor cat, and he went missing about a month ago when the movers accidentally left the door open and he got out.’
‘Oh no!’ Evie covered her mouth with her hands. ‘…wait, why are you smiling like that?’
‘Because, while the family was super thrilled he’d been found and he was safe, they also said they’d moved overseas! They couldn’t afford to have him sent on a plane and quarantined, so they were hoping that the vet clinic might be able to set him up with a loving new family…?’
‘That’s us?’ Evie gasped. ‘Hell YES, thats us! BUTTERCUP!’ Because she’d know in her heart they first time she laid eyes on him that that should be his name; just as she’d known that he should be theirs and be a part of their loving, little family. ‘Buttercup, where are you!’
‘Buddewcap!’ Luna shouted, toddling along behind Evie, blue block in hand, giggling when they started hunting in earnest. The three of them peeked behind curtains, under blankets, checking in baskets and boxes and bags for any sign of fluffy orange fur. He wasn’t under the bed. He wasn’t in the laundry basket. Where could he be? No amount of “pspspsps” or shoelace dangling or cat-biscuit shaking was luring him out.
Finally, they found him in the playroom, looking soft, sleepy, and quite at home in Luna’s reading nook playhouse. He was tucked in amongst all the cushions, blankets and plushies, a sweet little loaf of orange and adorableness.
‘Mrrrrep?’ His head popped up inquisitively, though he didn’t seem started by the sudden fluffy of activity. ‘Ma-mrow?’
‘That’s right! You get to stay with us now cutie!’ Though it was a squeeze with all of them, Evie tugged Luna into the reading nook alongside him. Buttercup chirruped again and butted his head against Evie’s chin, settling in between them both and purring loudly.
Laughing, Aiden took a seat in the armchair instead, fishing his phone from his pocket and snapping a photo of the giggly, fluffy, cuddle pile.
‘I love you,’ he mouthed.
Sitting up, Evie drank in the sight of him. The planes of his face. The rich darkness in his eyes. The way his hair fell. The slight flush in his cheeks. Evie’s heart hurt at the sight of him! But it was a good ache… like a deep stretch after a long sleep. A post-workout burn in the muscles. Her heart hurt because it held so much peace, so much love. For Luna, for the new baby on the way, for their new baby Buttercup! … And for him. Her husband. Her love. Her best friend.
‘You are so important to me,’ she said, feeling her eyes mist up a little. ‘I love our family.’
If Aiden was glowing before, his answering smile turned him radiant.
Aiden Zhou requested by @cadybear420 ! It has been a while since I played High School Story, the first act(?), I replayed the Class Act one more than that one, but I still love it! Aiden is cool, I don't have a big opinion on him, but he was fun to draw! :)
If you want to request a character, check this post!
