Anxiety is disguised as a friend. It promises that it is always looking out for your best interest. That it is protecting you and keeping you from being taken by surprise in anything in life. And it may help in some cases, keeping you from diving into something potentially risky or dangerous before thinking it over, or keeping an awareness of different possibilities. But on the whole, that friendly-looking thing with its constant stream of “what ifs” and “buts” and “are you sures” is toxic and decidedly UNhelpful. It’s voice shouldn’t be given center stage. It shouldn’t even get a supporting role.
