Pachamama on Netflix

Being that I am from the Quechua nation I was pretty stoked that a movie like Pachamama made such a platform. I loved the drawings, the story line, how the main characters were portrayed. However, what I did NOT like was how they made it seem like the Sapa Inca was basically terrified of the Spanish which is entirely not true. He among the rest of our people were resistant once they got there. The last thing I didn’t like was how they made the medicine man chant when he wanted it to rain. Quechua never sang like plains natives. It kind of hard to explain how we sing but our word are  very fast spoken with the tone changing high and low. Which would basically be like traditional Huayno that can still be heard today. Or even like ayahuasca icaros.  One crazy accuracy that most people don’t know is Inca is not a race, but was referred to the higher class civilization and the emperor. At some point Inca was used as an umbrella term to describe other tribes in peru. Not everyone was a descendant of the Inca, which is a common misconception in peru as well. It kind of like the Taino. Anyways, Other tribes especially other bands of Quechua actually hated the Inca. It was so dope to see my people on a big platform like that ,to be honest. Moana had been released and so was coco. There has been many native movies of other tribes being represented I always had to be like “what about my people?”. Polynesians were being represented, aztecs, mayans, Lakota, etc.  Especially when it comes to spanish speaking countries you hear more about aztec or mayans before Inca. It was so relieving to see this and it makes me  happy. I also love how there were quechua words constantly being thrown through out the movie such as our gods,animals, and  other objects. I think the creators did a really great job!
