Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor
The second book in the Nsibidi Scripts series (first book Akata Witch, third book expected out in 2022!). Sunny is a Leopard Person: she has magic and can access a whole world of legends and mysteries and magic. She and her friends helped prevent an apocalypse already. Now they find themselves faced with another one.
I liked these books, though this one was probably longer than necessary. The enemy they thwarted in the first book is back and Sunny and her friends have to find a hidden magical city and a hidden home in that city in order to prevent the apocalypse. A little repetitive in plot but the world building is so fun and interesting.
Cold Steel by Kate Elliott
The final book in the Spiritwalker trilogy! Oof, how to explain this one.
The world is Europe in the 1800s with magic and an emerging Industrial Revolution. An extended Ice Age has changed the landscape, physical and political, considerably.
Cousins Cat and Bee Barahal find themselves in the middle of a struggle between the mage houses, who seek to maintain their power, and General Camjiata, who claims to speak for the common people and hopes to free them from bondage, while also claiming it's his right to rule an empire.
Complicating this is the Wild Hunt, Dragons, and an accidental marriage between Cat and an annoying and handsome mage.
This series was a lot of fun. In the last book I got tired of hearing how horny Cat was but aside from that, highly recommend. It's a long, satisfying journey for all the characters.

A very worthy sequel to Akata Witch, which I wrote about a few posts down. Lots of fun to read, and has me excited to read more of Nnedi’s books, whether they’re written for adults or a YA audience. So much fun.
