Champ Famiglia

Last night, Monique Kawecki from Champfest fame handed me a copy of the Champ Worldwide La Famiglia zine they published to celebrate the people they worked with for their four first issues…

I was delighted to find in there this photo I shot of Joseph Allen Shea and Mark Gonzales setting up our Le Cercle part of the Public Domaine exhibition at La Gaité Lyrique in 2011. Good times!

Monique and her sister Joanna haven't slowed down since, and issue 6 of Champfest just came out.

Another champ night

This wednesday evening, the Champfest crew (Monique and Joanna) will launch their sixth issue around the corner from mine. So no excuse to not show up, especially as I share a duel piece in there, with Scott Bourne, my neighbor.

Another Robert, another wrap

I was looking for a picture to fit the times and mood, and somehow this one made sense…

Guess it actually sums up the current state of things for me, as the New Year is bound to be quite a busy one, with many projects overlapping…Hopefully, it will piece up nicely.

This photo was recently part of issue 04 of Ala Champfest, and came with its story. In case you have not coped a copy already, here's a little excerpt.

Robert Rauschenberg exhibition, Paris, 2006 

This was a strange day… Oliver Watson had commissioned me to document the set-up of the “Combine” retrospective for his late and beloved Paperback magazine. From the second I walked in the Pompidou Centre, that morning, the general mood was very hostile, somehow… It seemed that everybody working there was angry. When I got badged and OK’d in the floor where the show was going to be held, I made up my mind. It was just a question of stress: the exhibition was opening two days later and work looked far from finished. A small army was busy, but in the same angry mood. I wandered around for about an hour and got lucky enough to be there for when they opened the box of the famous “Monogram” piece which was an all time high of stress level, or so it seemed, for the museum people. I knew that, months before, two pieces from the same time period had been accidentally destroyed at the Pompidou Centre during the “Los Angeles 1955-1985 Naissance d'une capitale artistique” exhibition. Seconds later, I was kicked out the Rauschenberg level by an irate curator. Four more hours, I was shooting a skate photo in Lille, 200 kilometres away.

The next day, the big news was that the Pompidou Centre was on strike, and that the up-coming exhibition was postponed… I had my answer.

Champ, not camp!

If you are in London, or Paris, this saturday, you have the option to witness the launch of issue 04 of Ala Champfest magazine… I don't, as I'll most likely be feasting on pulpo in Vigo. When in Rome…

Anyway, Ala Chamfest is a labor of love from Joanna and Monique Kawecki, covering many grounds and speading the gospel of making stuff. This new issue is once again stacking paper at 258 pages, and features pieces on subjects as varied as David Lachapelle or Aaron Bondaroff.

I was gladly asked to be in there, also, to discuss Le Cercle, and photography in general, which turned into a little portfolio and, even better, a chance to grace one of the covers created for this issue. Yes, for the first time, Ala Champfest will give you the choice of two covers, and the other one is done by Phil Frost, nonetheless! Can't get much more exciting!

I still remember Phil doing backside smith slappys late at night in front of Alleged Gallery, on my very first trip to NYC. Yep, I'm old.

So, yeah, this saturday evening, Colette will be hosting the launch in Paris (213 RUE SAINT-HONORÉ 75001 PARIS), and the Idea Books Space will do so in London (Dover Street Market). Stop by, and check out the issue, if you're around!

The photo is actually a portrait of Jason Dill in his old China Town appartment, shot a couple years ago. When I mentionned doing a little story on people, where they live and how they make a place theirs, Dill candidly showed me around, empty fridge, drawers full of polaroids and all.
