Blogger’s Top 5 Musical Theatre Songs (w/ links)
So I decided (after watching a ton of Try Not To Sing Musical Version videos on Youtube) to pull together a list of my most meaningful/favorite musical theatre songs. I find that I say ‘Oh this is my favorite song’ to every song that plays, but I decided to compile my real favorites on here and give a little reason as to why they are my faves. If there is a song on here you wanna check out, click the link! Please remember that this is MY OPINION. You need not agree with me or like any of my faves.
I hope you’ll enjoy it!
1) Do You Hear the People Sing?-Les Miserables
This was the song that got me interested in musical theatre. I went to see the film for my French class mainly for extra credit and came out liking it. It wasn’t until one day when I was at home extremely ill that I put on the soundtrack and this beauty came on that I had immediately fallen in love with theatre. The atmosphere of this song, whether be the film version or the musical version, is just so intriguing and strong-willed that after you listen to it, you feel like you can accomplish anything.
2) Night Will Come-Groundhog Day
One of the most chilling and hauntingly beautiful songs ever created in musical theatre with an important message. The orchestration is just out of this world in this song. The usage of the piano and strings bring out such a chilling atmosphere that matches well with the context of the story of Phil Connors trying to save an old man’s life but fails to do so, learning to appreciate what we have because it can be taken away from us at any time. And as we grow, we learn to use our experiences as ways to understand and teach us the importance of those around us and ourselves.
3) Hurricane-Hamilton
This song helped me when I was going through a deep depression during my senior year of high school. Hamilton is stuck in a position where he seems to have no way through, like being in a storm. My storm was my depression, but I like Hamilton I “wrote my way out” in the form of I fought through my depression and graduated high school with A’s and B’s in honors classes. Out of all the songs in Hamilton that I love, this is the one that means the most to me.
4) Revolting Children-Matilda
Unlike the top three which had super personal meaning, Revolting Children is on my list because of how upbeat and fun it is. I’ve seen Matilda three times already and the song gets better and better with every listen.
5) Jump in the Line-Beetlejuice
It’s funny that this is in my favorites since my favorite song from the album is Home, but after seeing Beetlejuice live, this song made a home in my heart by just how wonderful it ties up this crazy ride of a musical, connecting not just the movie references, but shows growth in Lydia as a character as she has found her home, her destination, with her messy family. I would be lying if I didn’t say I cried at the end.
