An excerpt from GQ (May 1979) in which Alan Flusser reveals some of his sartorial details. While these intricacies are decidedly affected, their presence in a mainstream fashion magazine underscores just how much GQ’s direction and editorial tone have changed in the past four decades. I won’t go full Old Head and lament that no one cares about trousers featuring layered, triple-button waistbands with side fasteners in 2018 -- these are the triple monks of dress pants and no one needs that in their lives -- but it is interesting to see how an overtly casual approach to dressing has limited the imagination for and marketability of such details. RIP to the kinds of trousers that are likely to punctuate an otherwise successful date night with a blindingly red flag.
