For prey species living on Kenya's grasslands, boundaries are less important than safety. This Coke's hartebeest stood at the centre of a small zebra herd — an unlikely gathering, yet utterly natural. Out here, safety is shared, and the savannah belongs to all. It may seem strange to see a mixed herd like this, but these animals are not huddled together by chance. Different species watch for different threats, listen for different sounds and, together, they are safer. Slightly uncertain about my presence, the zebras and hartebeest turned in unison to assess if I was friend or foe, proving the value of having multiple eyes scanning for danger.

trick or treat!!!
Hello you little doves! I have not fallen off the face of the earth, though I have been away on holiday for 3 weeks. Now I return to you with another treat. Four more to go after this one so we might make it before Halloween comes round again!
Perhaps the theme should be updated to "ungulate studies" because its another land beast. I really want to get better at landscapes and foliage and there's only one way to do that.
This time it's based on this stunning photo of a Lelwel hartebeest. Again from inaturalist and shared under a CC-BY-NC license. That lush golden pelt against the soft green dazzled my eyes the second I saw it. I'm quite happy with how this turned out overall, and I like the palm tree. But the shrubby things in the foreground... grrr. Also I am incapable of doing these quickly; this one took 1.5 hours lol. Gotta learn to keep it rough.
