THE LAST KINGDOM - Season 5 Episode 1
Aldhelm | The Last Kingdom 5.04
I was gonna wait until Aldhelm was character of the week again to post this, but I’m doing it now instead. I wrote a poem about Aethelflaed from his point of view :)
Enjoy! A chess-piece maiden, nothing more Was how you came before me, One half of a marriage to unite the lands; A wife, for someone lordly.
As seasons turned, so did my mind And you, from piece to person; A lady to be fond of, Though my truth remained unspoken.
But in blood and sweat, salt and warm water My feelings did fall forth: You have my heart, my lady… And you had looked, but then you saw.
Though I did not die that day, I’m glad that I confessed— For if my truth remained unspoken still, My soul could never rest.
After a short visit with Aldhelm's brother Beorhtric at his fortress in Legacæstir, Aldhelm and Aethelflaed return to their home in Saltwic. When they had left, they had only just started exploring their relationship with one another, and everything was still very new and awkward. It was strange being back in that place after only a short absence; everything felt and looked a little different to Aldhelm, everything was just a little off. The place that had been his home for many years now felt like a foreign place and he was not sure how things would change.
They arrive in the early evening of the fourth day of traveling, and ate an austere meal compared to the feasts that had enjoyed in Legacæstir and Rumcofa. After the meal, Aldhelm speaks to Aethelflaed, voicing his concerns about their future together.
"So much has changed in the past few weeks," he starts, the nervousness apparent in his voice. "I assume that I am still to sleep in my own chambers?" he asks hesitantly.

Sipping from her wine, Aethelflaed uses the time to formulate a reply. She lowers the chalice to the table, her fingers tapping on the side, then raises her gaze to Aldhelm.
"Well," she says hesitantly. "There are ways in which we could make it feasible to share a bed. You are an early riser, so you could sneak out before the rest of the household rises. Or... we trust that Sable would keep confidence, as she is the only other person to enter my chambers. So long as you are comfortable with those options, anyway.
"Or do you have a suggestion?"
@lordaldhelmofmercia
I probably wasn’t the man for that task.
Aldhelm and Aethelflaed
My gift to the Aldflaed nation.
This is the colored final drawing of the Aldflaed post-Tettenhall forehead touch that I sketched a few weeks ago. Prismacolor colored pencils in 11" x 14" (28 x 35.5 cm) Strathmore drawing paper. This was the first time I have attempted a bokeh (out of focus) style background; I hope it turned out ok.
After seeing the post yesterday I realized that their height difference is wrong but let's just pretend Aethelflaed is standing on a rock or something, LOL!
Drawing/painting chainmail remains the bane of my existence...
I am shocked that there are no Aldflaed fanarts! At least not as far as I have seen. That needs to be remedied. I will continue to make it my personal mission to increase the number of Aldhelm and Aldflaed fanart in existence.
