The Longest Ten Seconds
MAINE:
I saw one of the staff motioning for me to walk, but my feet were glued to the floor. I took a deep breath and prayed that my legs would cooperate, and thankfully they did.
It was the longest ten seconds of my life.
We both took slow, unsure steps towards each other. As he moved closer, the image of him became clearer.
I know that our eyes have a blind spot, a point in the retina that is not sensitive to light.
In that moment, everything else fell into it, and all I saw was him.
ALDEN:
As we were approaching each other, I hoped and I prayed that, just this once, there would be a problem with the set-up.
I knew that a barrier would fall between us but in that moment, all that filled my head was, Please let the props malfunction.
Walking towards her felt like being on water. I smiled while mini clips of my swimming and diving played at the back of my brain.
You know the feeling of your head going lighter and lighter as the pressure your ears goes higher? The way you would hold your breath until your lungs complain? How underwater, it seemed like you’re in your own little world—a world where your senses are numbed, your limbs are dulled, and all the other noises are blocked out, but somehow, for some reason, you feel in your veins that you are overwhelmed by so many sensations all at once?
That was what being three feet away from her felt like.
She blew me a kiss, and suddenly I was a body floating in a raging sea in the middle of a storm.
I brought my hand to my mouth, breathed out across my palm and let the air carry the kiss to her.
She smiled, and I saw a lighthouse in her eyes.
And right then and there, I surrendered to the currents and trusted that they would bring me safely to her shore.
