Some soft po…pcorns I have to share 🥵
It's pride month and Aleix Viu was wearing a face mask with the colors of the pan flag in ESBK last weekend. I don't care if it was by chance, seeing the colors in parc ferme made me happy 💖💛💙
I anon, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I don't follow ESBK, so I didn't know him or that he wore the pan flag in both podiums.
So, I did a little digging in his Instagram and I saw he didn't use it previously, but his team used a normal mask. Also, I looked at the teams Instagram, Ivo Lopes did use a normal mask. So probably Aleix did because of sponsorship deals or because he wanted to 👀👀👀.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this with me anon, it makes me happy to see a more LGBTQIA+ representation.
To that lovely anon who put Aleix Viu and his pan mask in my inbox, apparently is a sponsorship thing 😓😓😓. @racingmuppett brought into my attention (thanks for that, you are never intruding, and I'm glad or your help) that 226ers is using the colours of the pan flag. They (I don't want to assume anything) have a post about it in here.
I looked into photos of the mask and I see some sponsor stuff 😓😓😓. (Sorry for the crap quality of the photos)
Anyway, the pan flag was on the podium 🙌🙌🙌

Aleix Viu takes Misano Pole at the end

Aleix Viu snatched pole position for Saturday’s single Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race at Misano with his penultimate qualifying lap. The 16-year-old Spaniard then slid off his KTM RC 250 R trying to go even faster. He quickly remounted to finish the lap and tops the timing sheets with Japanese Kazuki Masaki and Ai Ogura completing the front row.
Cup points leader Can Öncü heads the second row and the 14-year-old Turk is happy to be there. “Yes, not bad after the big high side in FP2,” he admitted thoughtfully. “We couldn’t test here so it is new for us. The track is good though and the bike is working OK, not perfect, we might change the front a little for tomorrow but I think I can race with the others at the front.”
The Japanese duo Masaki is just five points behind him in second and he too is new to Misano. “I like the track but it is certainly difficult,” admitted the 17-year-old. “The bike is good, the gearing is working well and I just hope we can improve the front a bit tomorrow, it is moving around a bit on the brakes and I’m not happy with that. I think it will be a great race.”

Ogura has the experience from last year and the 16-year-old also reported his bike as good but not perfect. “The front isn’t quite right but as usual I prefer to ride it like that rather than risk making it worse for the race. I don’t know how the race will go, maybe everyone will be quicker than today.”
The solo Spaniard Viu is at Misano for the third time, was very happy with the way qualifying went and has no thoughts of changing the bike. “No, it’s great, we went the wrong way with the gearing for FP2 but when we went back for Qualifying it was really good. I felt confident and by half way through the session we were all quite close at the front, running lap record pace.”
“I was feeling better and better on the bike so I decided to push for pole and I knew that lap was good but I wasn’t sure it was enough for pole so I then pushed even harder, too hard because I slid off. But is was just a slide and I got straight back on. I’m really looking forward to a great race,” enthused Viu who is third in the points chase, 28 behind Öncü.
An Italian and a Czech The locals have a hero in Omar Bonoli and the 15-year-old Italian was quick all through Friday and will sit on the grid in fifth. “I’m quite happy, top five all the way and I think we have a good setting for the bike. Santi (Santiago Morralla – Rookies Cup suspension engineer) made some changes for qualifying and that worked well. For me the hard part is over, that’s qualifying, now it’s the race… and the race… is the race.”
Completing the second row is Filip Salač and the 15-year-old Czech is very relieved to be finally able to ride. He broke his leg in a non Rookies race and missed the last four events though he tried unsuccessfully to ride in Brno. “I’m happy to be back, I’ve got no muscle and it’s still a bit sore but a lot better than before. I’ll just do what I can in the race.”

Aleix Viu holds on to Jerez 2 from Salac and Oncu
Aleix Viu rode a great Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Race 2 at Jerez, capped by a perfectly judged final corner, to hold the advantage as Filip Salač stole second from Can Öncü on the line. Saturday’s winner, Ai Ogura, was fourth ahead of fellow Japanese Kazuki Masaki in a blanket finish of five KTM RC 250 Rs.
It was another drama packed 16 laps and 16-year-old Spaniard Viu was quickly into his stride thanks to a bike change following a frustrating 5th in Race 1. Though he looked to have drawn Öncü away from the pack into a simple battle for the win the chasing trio finally caught them again on the second to last lap.
A good swap “I am very happy with that,” beamed Viu. “Yesterday I rode a spare bike as I had trouble with mine in practice but today I was back on mine and a lot happier, we also changed the gearing and the settings were very good. A bit of a strange problem with the engine and I thought I might lose the race on the line but we just held on.”
“That last lap was a big fight, Can came past and I had to overtake him again. Coming to the last corner I thought Can or Filip might come down the inside but I just braked very very late and they couldn’t. I have to thank my mechanics and all my supporters because now I am leading the points and I just can’t wait to get to the next race.”
Brilliant charge It looked as though Salač might miss out on the podium as he did on Saturday when he was fourth but the 15-year-old Czech put in a blinder of a finish. “We changed the suspension after yesterday, it helped but I still had a problem with the rear and lost quite a bit of grip towards the end.”
“I was back in fifth but with two laps to go I knew I had to do something. I managed to get ahead of Masaki and then at the last corner I knew that there is always drama so I hung back a little to make sure I got a perfect drive out and just managed to pass Ogura and Öncü across the grid,” he grinned.
Great second debut Öncü, the 13-year-old Turk, did his best to shrug off the sore left shoulder he sustained when brought down in the first corner on Saturday. “It was a hard race, especially because this guy is so fast,” He exclaimed with a laugh, a huge grin and punch to Viu as they stepped down from the podium.
“This morning I could hardly move the shoulder at all and in the race it was painful, I didn’t want to do anything crazy and though I wanted to win he was very fast and I would have been crazy to try any harder,” Öncü rode superbly in what was effectively his first Rookies Cup race and took the fight to Viu all the way, getting in front more than once.
Saturday’s winner Rory Skinner banged into Sean Kelly early on and the pair fell heavily. Kelly was taken to hospital for further checks while Skinner was not seriously hurt but faces a penalty at the next event. Eleven races remain in the 11th Rookies Cup season with the next pair being at Assen on June 24th and 25th.
