Exhausted both emotionally and physically, Amber was pretty much ready to go home. Just the thought of her little two bedroom apartment made her want to curl up and sleep for the next 17 hours. But she also knew that she had to do this. Which is why she was standing in the gallery, an uneaten protein bar in her lab coat pocket and a bottle of water in her hand. She watched her brother operate for the first time and the sight of it made her want to break into tears. Now she wished that she had done this sooner. That she had shown up and gone to him first instead waiting for the right moment, like there would ever be one. But after the accident, everything had changed.
Her first thought upon seeing the diner had been Alex. Was he in there? What about the kids? Jo? But that immediate trigger thought had been for her big brother and she had forced herself to work, only relaxing when her sister in law told her that Alex was alright. That had been her moment of realization. That Alex could have been hurt or died and she never would have gotten the chance to hug him or hell, even have him scream in her face. It had scared her into taking charge and making a decision.
And as her finger hovered over the intercom, that decision was clear in her mind. Taking a deep breath, she pressed the button and cleared her throat. “Hey um, Alex.”
