A Bit of Home, Even Afar
Patrolling the line up north today was uneventful for Aleyanna. But she also knew today was kind of significant. It was an established day of giving thanks for what you had in your life. It traditionally involved spending time with family and friends, and a nice massive feast. Well, the past couple of years had not been kind for her to do this kind of celebration. And, it appeared that this year was going to be the same.
No, she told herself. This was going to be different. Maybe the feast wouldn’t be grand, and maybe everyone with her wouldn’t be with those that mattered the most, but with what was there. She was going to make do. She would bring her friends, and husband together on this day, and there would be a quasi mini-feast. Not the greatest, but it would be shared in good company.
There was still some extra fresh fruit about, and she would use that for a salad. Some freshly hunted meat would serve as the main course; obviously not the traditional offering but a new tradition could be established. Some bread had just been made earlier today, and quite a lot of it was prepared also, so it could accompany the feast. There was also some beverages to enjoy, beer, wine, and a few nonalcoholic options, so they were added in also. And lastly, well, she didn’t tell anyone this when they were packing, but a few sweets and chocolates had been stowed away for a special occasion. Some of it got mixed into a pie, while the rest were kept aside to be consumed on their own.
When everything was prepared, she found a small cart and with what cutlery she had, she plated and placed the food on the cart before wheeling it over to the others. When she arrived, she saw everyone turn their gaze to the cart with the mix of aromas coming from the food.
“How long have you been working on that?” Scipio inquired. “That looks wonderful.”
“Quite a while, practically since I was done with the morning patrol. Today is kind of a big feast day, and well, this is my way of showing gratitude to you all.”
“I, thank you,” Valdemar added.
“Not a problem. Let me get some utensils out and we can hand out the food. I hope you all enjoy.”
