The Alfa Romeo Tipo 103 was a prototype small car with a transverse 896cc DOHC engine driving the front wheels, developed in the late 1950s as an entry-level model. The project was cancelled in 1961 over concerns that the car would cost far more to produce than it could be sold for. Alfa Romeo had a business relationship with Renault at this time, so the design of the Tipo 103 (though not its mechanical configuration) was passed to Renault for the R8.
