Scream Queen - Keke Palmer
Alice (2022), dir. Krystin Ver Linden
I was randomly thinking about the Born Sexy Yesterday trope and realized Alice spits in the face of that so wonderfully. She IS beautiful. And she IS sexy. And she IS naive when it comes to the modern world. But the movie never presents something like Frank making her a bologna sandwich as a moment of great revelation that kick starts their romance.
He introduces her to a lot of new things and ideas but it's framed as just something any decent person would do in the situation. The movie even dresses her in his dead wife's clothes but she isn't supposed to be a replacement. She isn't some sexy ingenue that tells him her horrible situation and then he goes on to save her. Alice is the catalyst for everything. She saves herself and everyone, including Frank. We're not meant to see her lack of knowledge as charming or whimsical. It's heartbreaking that she doesn't know these basic things because of her enslavement and there is never a moment where she is framed as "oooh~she's sexy because she doesn't know any better~" and I appreciate that.

I never told anyone that they had to stay. I just never told them that they could go.

Enjoyed watching four movies so far this weekend, Combat Shock was the only one I’d already seen.
