Void In The Stars

Ironically, there was plenty of work to do on a lonely planet.
Sorting through the research data consumed most of her day, but the familiarity of it helped. Numbers, reports, environmental scans, crop projections, all things she understood. Things that behaved logically.
For a few hours, she could almost pretend she was back on Earth.
That this was just another assignment.
She finished her last task and turned off the computer.
Reflected in the darkened monitor stood an abnormal silhouette which made her jolt violently, a scream tearing from her throat.
Her chair nearly tipped as she spun around, heart hammering wildly, only to find Commander Riddle standing behind her. Relief washed over her so quickly it almost made her dizzy.
He stood completely still, dark eyes fixed on her.
How did she not hear him enter the room?
“Did I frighten you?” he asked, taking a step closer.
“C-Commander… yes, embarrassingly enough, you did.” Hermione let out a nervous laugh. “I was so absorbed in the data I didn’t realize you’d entered.”
His eyes glanced at the monitor then back to her, “Are you finished for the day?”
“Yes.”
“May I take you somewhere?”
Hermione laughed softly, assuming it was a joke, because there were about only three places they could go, but his expression remained perfectly still.
“I’d be honored,” she said quickly. “May I ask where?”
He extended his hand. When she placed hers in it, he pulled her smoothly to her feet. The movement forced her closer, her neck straining slightly to keep her eyes on his.
