ok powers come from wanting something strongly right (plus the mutation causing it of course), so what did everyone want to get their powers?
Logan's started with his parents keeping everything out of his reach at a young age. It grew with the want to know what people were thinking about when it came to his powers. He didn't like secrets. Funny how that worked out for him.
Patton was a lonely kid. His mother was always overprotective. The powers he got only made her worse.
Virgil wanted more time. Time to spend with his sick mother and time to stop and think and not worry and panic in the moment.
Toman really really wanted to be a hero and shoot lasers from his hands. He was wired with energy as a kid. It grew into his electricity powers. This only happened after his dad helped him get over his fear of thunder and lightning. He thought it was really cool after that.
Kids want a lot of things strongly. In those moments they wanted those things. If it was something silly then they would have had silly powers. It's just a gamble.
Can you tell us more about Logan’s tattoo? Like, when exactly did he get it and why?
Ohh, fun!
So the idea of Logan having a tattoo was one I played around with for a long time before something convinced me to make it real. (I also played around with Virgil having one and ultimately decided not to) This is gonna have PT spoilers about Logan’s backstory so proceed with caution.
There is one thing I will note about the tattoo. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Robin drew it here but she made a mistake. The tattoo actually says “Always Remember” and not Never Forget but close enough.
After accidentally making his parents lose all memory of him, he moved in with his aunt and uncle. He had to explain what happened but he didn’t do too well. He refused to take blame for it, claiming it was an accident so he shouldn’t be at fault.
After a bit of time, he had talked to his uncle who had told him that he needed to be more responsible. At this point, Logan had been asked to help in the bakery and was being a punk about it and still being a bit reckless, though less so than before. He wasn’t sneaking out every night like he was with his parents. Then his aunt puther foot down and his uncle pulled him to the side. After a heart to heart, Logan ran off.
When he came back? Tattoo. Pluto with a banner that said “Always Remember”. He claimed that it was to remember that Pluto was a planet, no matter what people had said. (There was an obvious parallel to it and himself but he wouldn’t admit that.) But the banner was to remind Logan of what he had done. To keep him in check and hold himself responsible.
After that, he decided he needed a change. He graduated high school (his parents didn’t show) and decided to pack up his band tees and upgrade to button ups and sweaters. He focused on his studies and graduated from college. He helped around the bakery a lot to help pay bills (since his aunt and uncle helped pay for college) and got a job.
A few years later he ran into a certain curly haired person at a cafe when people watching (he wanted to limit the use of his powers and he figured this was a harmless way to do it) and discovered he wasn’t alone. And the rest is history.
Hey, another weird question, but do you have a definitive idea of what New Gainesburg is like? Like what kind of different parts of the city there are, what its internal and nearby geographical features are, what kind of mass transport infrastructures it might have like a port or a train yard or an airport, and stuff like that?
David, you always ask the best questions. xD Since this is based off of the three main/biggest cities I’ve been to (all northern cities since that’s where I live.)
I wrote a lot more than I thought so it’s all under a cut!
New Gainesburg(also spelled Gainesburgh I switch between the two xD) has a population of roughtly 150,000-200,000ish and has a small subway system and a pretty big bus system and bus depot to travel in, around, and out of the city. There is an airport a few miles outside of the city that helps for outside travel. The river isn’t really big enough to have a port.
There is a river that runs on the east side that breaks the main city to the residential suburbs. That is NOT where they currently live. New Gainesburg have 2 colleges and they sort of live near the campus of one so some of their neighbors are college kids. It’s just off of downtown that has a lot of rent able space. They almost rented out in an apartment building!
So you have the suburbs divided by a river with a bridge on the east side, there’s downtown, the business district, there’s a few parks (and dog parks of course!), there’s a whole mess of office buildings and skyscrapers. The center of town has an older style of architecture for some of the buildings. You can sort of almost draw a line where the newer buildings branch out and form. The city is a bit of a messy layout but parts are on a grid pattern (like how you see in NYC for example). It sits geographically in a bit of a rocky area but not too terribly close to mountains. They can be seen waaay off in the distance (maaaybe 200-300 mi, don’t quote me on that) There are some hills but it lays pretty flat in the city. Most hiking trails are a drive away.
That is about all I mentally have for the city as I write it. Feel free to ask more questions or ask me to elaborate. I’ve never lived in the city but I’ve stayed in one for a weekish and I’ve been in and out of them my whole life since I live so close to them. Bus routes and subways and all. xD
Do thunderstorms affect Roman’s power while fighting, kinda like how the moon in alta gave the waterbenders more power, dose the same thing happen to Roman with the surrounding electricity or dose the rain null him out?
I've answered something similar in a way before.
Basically, it gives him a boost. He gets more energy and is a bit more powerful depending on how much lightning there is.
What would happen if Roman got shot with a lightning strike? Would he get really powerful or would he have the normal effect or would he get too powerful and lose control or something?
Roman + taser = Has to burn off that energy in a safe manner away from everyone.
Roman + lightning?? He’d be sparking off so much energy it’d be painful to contain. He’d be glowing with energy, his eyes alight with it. It’d be dangerous to be near him until he burned it off or sent it somewhere else.
I... may have tried coming up with an idea where he uses Avatar: The Last Airbender as inspiration to redirect lightning. But I couldn’t come up with anything.
Can we talk about how the duck has its own boarder/aura? Does that happen with all animals? Where would their voids lead?
Every living creature has one. Plants do not but they do freeze. I guess it’s more a level of awareness that makes them exist. As for animals, they definitely get one. The series that inspired ALiP actually had a guinea pig create a portal that released the monster that became the monster and that bothered me a lot.
They work much different in ALiP. If an animal has a portal, it still goes to where they think. Duck thinks of food? Portal goes to food. But if a person/animal isn’t thinking of anything specifically, the portal doesn’t go anywhere.
Logan! You had an emo phase, right? Do you still have anything from that period? Shirts, albums, jewelry perhaps?
Logan: I had to... leave most of it behind where I'm sure it's long gone by now. I do still have a few things, however. Some old albums, a shirt or two. I got rid of the jewelry and I believe my ear piercings have healed. It stays in my old room at the bakery.
And, uh. Maybe one other thing. It's a bit more... Permanent. -rubs shoulder- but I'm fine with that.
we don’t really know anything about Patton’s dad?? what’s he like??
Minor spoilers for Probable Theorem
Patton’s mom was a stay at home mom. She raised Patton pretty much by herself. So Patton’s dad brings in all of the income. I think I cut this scene from the final draft of chapter 13 of PT that mentions what I’m talking about. (The chapter Logan goes over to have dinner with Patton’s mom) There is one brief mention of him that made it into that chapter, though.
“Will your father be there?”“Nah, dad usually works evenings or nights and is asleep all day so even if he’s not working, he probably won’t say much.”
Patton’s dad works overnights at a warehouse so Patton didn’t see him much as a kid. He’d see him in the mornings coming home from work and just before dinner. They’d play and eat and he’d leave for work again. His dad really just wanted them to have a comfy life so he works as hard as he can. He only hears small things from his wife about what’s been going on, so for the most part he has no clue.
He’s a big friendly, jolly man that Patton looks up to and respects deeply.
