The centuries-old tradition of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated from an Irish folklore tale about a man named Stingy Jack. To summarize: Stingy Jack made a deal with the Devil, and found himself wandering between Heaven and Hell upon his death, with just a glowing coal to light the way. Jack put this coal inside a hollowed-out turnip — sound familiar? Placing the “jack-o’-lanterns” into the window or near doors was meant to frighten away Stingy Jack and other evil spirits.
