#repost from @nikkibilliejean, founder of @allthingsankara: Fashion Brings People Together - Last year at @allthingsankara pop up 2018 (Powered by @shopallthingsankara /@shopatamarketplace) at the Civic Center in Silver Spring, MD the lady in this video was at another event upstairs, above the pop up. She came downstairs to the pop up and was intrigued by all of the ankara print designs from all of the vendors. She met my mom who was vending the All Things Ankara table and told her she was interested in buying some fabric. She also mentioned she wanted someone to tie a headwrap for her. So my mom called me over to get the job done. • I love how ankara fashion brings people together. With its popularity, I also love how it’s creating a bridge for people to have conversations about things which ordinarily people wouldn’t talk about or experience. Many people ask me questions like: “Is it ok for non-black people to wear ankara clothing?” How do I feel about cultural-appropriation when it come to ankara clothing? • My answer: Yes, it is ok. Everyone can wear ankara print clothing. It’s out there for you to wear… it’s up for grabs! The question is whether you are being respectful of it. Ankara prints are a universal fabric created by the Dutch, popularized by Africans and mainly made by the Asians (Not all of the fabrics come from Asia, but most of them do). • It’s virtually impossible for any people to not be influenced by another culture, everything is so entwined. Ankara fashion is everywhere. Ankara fashion is for everyone. • 👕: @shopatamarketplace 💇🏾♀️💄: @itsflappjack 🎥: @fhkabia 🔈: @djdiddymula 🎶: “Bum Bum” by @timayatimaya • #nikkibilliejean #allthingsankara #allthingsankarapopup #fashionbringspeopletogether #headwrap #howtotieaheadwrap (at Silver Spring Civic Building) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuH3IrdATMY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12s7z04f9khbo
