I still don't understand the important thing that Bakugou will do for the story. In many ways, Ochako took on such important roles that she changed society. She connected heroes with civilians. Now she will connected civilians with villians. Like with Deku and shoto. What about Bakugou? I still don't understand what is special about him, what can happen that will affect the story and the society. And I'm sorry for my English. I'm bad at this.
I'm not sure I fully understand what you're saying about Ochako's role. I don't see how Ochako's (or Izuku's, or Shouto's) role in the current arc is about civilians (or at least not yet).
But I have two answers to your question.
I would actually be excited to be you. You don't see where Katsuki's story is going right now, and that means you are more likely to figure it out right when Katsuki's character arc concludes. That timing would be so rewarding to understand the story. You don't HAVE to understand it yet. It's not complete!
To me, all the characters make up a piece of the overall story. If the overall story is about a societal shift from one way of thinking about heroes and villains to a new way, then Izuku's piece is about heroes needing to SAVE villains, Shouto's piece is about recognizing one's humanity before their quirk, Ochako's piece is about changing the mindsets of the civilians (and in the most recent arc about connecting with the villains kinda like how Izuku may do), Tenya's piece is about determining which parts of society's rules to uphold and which to break, and Katsuki's piece is about changing how heroes operate. So Izuku addresses villains, Shouto addresses humanity vs quirk, Ochako addresses civilians, Tenya addresses social expectations and rules, and Katsuki addresses heroes.
Katsuki's character arc has been about a boy who wanted to be the Number One Hero, the greatest ever, by himself--and how his vision of "Number One" changes into a leader who values teamwork and treats the "whole" as stronger than the sum of its parts. "All For One" and "One For All" and all that.
His story began in chapter 1 when all the heroes who were supposed to save him wouldn't do so. He saw heroism in Izuku (which made him self-conscious) where no one else did until All Might came along. He spends the whole story coming to terms with how he had one image of heroism that doesn't hold up in the face of All Might's heroism, Izuku's heroism, what heroism truly is. He regrets his weakness that he believes led to All Might's downfall. He tries to learn and change to become a stronger hero so he never lets anything like that happen again. He learns about rescue and sacrifice. He becomes a charismatic, unifying leader. He brings the whole class together to bring Izuku home. He rallied all the heroes at the UA battlefield to face TomurAFO without Izuku. He credited everyone behind the scenes for helping them have a shot at stopping TomurAFO. He rejected TomurAFO's philosophizing with insight and experience. He is the evidence that society can change, that things aren't as hopeless as TomurAFO makes them seem. Katsuki is uniting heroes to be BETTER than they have been in the past.
So yeah. From my point of view, Katsuki is addressing the problems with HEROES. He's making heroes be actual heroes.
I thought this would be a fun, lighthearted post to make, because this certainly gave me a chuckle.
The official Viz translation of chapter 322 is out, and as always there are some interesting translation choices.
Of particular note, this one’s been making the rounds:
I thought it’d be fun to go into why this is actually a pretty decent translation.
死柄木にぶっ刺された時言った事覚えてっか?
しがらきにぶっさされたときいったことおぼえてっか?
Shigaraki ni bussasareta toki itta koto oboete kka?
I originally translated this sentence as, “Do you remember what I said when I was stabbed by Shigaraki?” I try to give the most literal translations possible so that people can compare other translations to each other, but even the most literal translation will lose some important bits.
Katsuki uses the phrase ぶっ刺された bussasareta.
Sasareta means "stabbed." The ぶっ at the beginning adds the bus- part, which is a slangy, crude prefix that emphasizes extremeness. I see it often paired with violent words, turning korosu (“to kill”) into bukkorosu (which is hard to translate, so maybe like "kill you dead" or "kill with prejudice" or "FUCKIN' KILL").
Katsuki uses this prefix often. In general, he does this kind of stuff with his language a lot. He talks fairly crudely with a lot of slang, typically playing up the delinquent speech.
So, "Shigaraki made Swiss cheese outta me" is actually...a really good translation, even if it sounds corny in English. It gets across the slangy, crass/rude/offensive nature of Katsuki's speech, even if it's not as rough as the modern English slang you might expect to hear from a delinquent in 2021. It also--shockingly--maintains the passive tense of the verb conjugation.
Given the age range of the target audience, I have to allow for the validity of this translation, even if in real life we'd expect someone like Katsuki to say something a little cruder and more...memetic.
so it’s like… “remember when shigaraki stabbed the shit outta me”
“stabbed the heck outta me”
“remember how shigaraki skewered me!”
“shish kebabed me!”
“made a leaky bucket of me!”
- Al, 2021
"remember when shigaraki shanked me"
"remember when shigaraki super-stabbed me?"
“s-s-s-stabbed!”
- Pikahlua, 2021
Remember how he made me into his own personal showerhead? Yeah, that was a wash….
Remember how he made me into his own personal colander and had me strain his noodles?
‘Member that one time Shigaraki took, like, an army of hole punchers to me?
Katsuki’s “Image of Rescue”: Chapter 284 Deep Blue Meta Dive
Thanks to fandom saint @alluratron, I finally got my hands on the raw scans for chapter 284. I translated them, and, as promised...
Please join me on a deeper meta dive into the most mistranslated and yet most important (fight me) chapter in My Hero Academia!
(If you’d like to better understand my English translation of this chapter, please click here for my detailed translation notes.)
If you read my thoughts on only one page, please let it be page 11.
WARNING: The website that sources the raw scans watermarks each page. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE MAY BE POP-UPS ON THIS SITE THAT ARE GRAPHICALLY 18+. I highly recommend a pop-up/ad blocker if you attempt to go there.
Page 2
Izuku: "I'm entrusting Gran Torino and the others to you!!"
Endeavor: "Shouto, treat the injured!"
Endeavor: Pathetic...!!!!
Endeavor: Right now the one who should be over there...is me, the number one!!
Katsuki: “Wait Deku!!"
Katsuki: "You're the one who most shouldn't be near that guy!!"
Katsuki: "'Erasure' has already...disappeared!!"
Izuku: "Then who else can keep Shigaraki in the sky!?"
As I mentioned in the detailed translation notes, Endeavor’s little pity party calls back to All Might in chapter 1.
This is just one of many details in not only this chapter but this whole mini-battle arc that reference chapter 1 (and several other chapters). This war arc may as well be a highly-condensed version of everything that came before it. But of course I have to point out the chapter 1 parallels most because of what happens in chapter 285.
Page 7
Ochako: "Imagine swimming in the air, using your arms and legs to balance......"
Ochako: "Yeah like that!"
Izuku: "I see... so it's like this?"
Izuku: Propulsion with Air Force!!
Ochako: "Oh! Nice!"
All Might: "Let's do more coaching in that state with Black Whip!
Izuku: "Yessir!!"
Katsuki: "He's getting the hang of it."
All Might: "'Float' is similar to 'Zero Gravity' as a quirk that keeps the body in the air... By first solidifying the image,"
All Might: "we can make sure any outburst would be suppressed, and then just him being conscious of wanting to fly will unlock it."
Izuku’s little background training with Ochako and the others seems light-hearted and innocuous at first glance, but I think Horikoshi’s being cheeky with us here.
Note that later in the chapter (page 10), Katsuki will reference a moment from chapter 257. That was the chapter in which Izuku and Katsuki learn Izuku will unlock Float next. Katsuki’s reaction to this revelation is...
This flashback is the training resulting from that revelation. Then we see Izuku learning to propel himself through the air with Air Force. It’s pretty similar to how Katsuki himself flies with his explosions, which he brags about in chapter 257.
This training is another instance of Izuku copying Katsuki’s skills.
Thus, Izuku’s background training serves two symbolic purposes:
1. Izuku is a stand-in for Katsuki, so what Izuku is learning in the background is meant to parallel what’s happening in Katsuki’s head as he’s talking with All Might over to the side.
2. Izuku’s learning Katsuki’s combat skills while Katsuki is perhaps simultaneously learning some of Izuku’s rescue skills, which...well, chapter 285 comes next.
Page 8
Katsuki: "I think at some point you won't be able to keep fooling them."
Katsuki: "This is different from when it was just super strength."
Katsuki: "Eventually you won't be able to hide it.
All Might: "I won't disclose anything other than 'Black Whip,' but"
All Might: "to avoid another outburst like before, I'll have him visualize [the remaining quirks]."
All Might: “...that night, you seemed to understand"
All Might: "the fact that great power can be passed on to others"
All Might: "means that one must think carefully about what risks that brings to other people."
First of all, way to make Katsuki look super thirsty throughout this whole bit, Horikoshi.
This whole page makes me wonder just whose idea it was to invite Sero, Tsuyu, and Ochako to help out with Izuku’s training. Sure, the flashback sort of presents it as All Might’s and Izuku’s idea, but it’s never outright stated. Someone brought it up first, and while I imagine it was more likely Izuku (given All Might’s voiced reluctance here and Izuku’s ability to considers others’ quirks on the same level as his unlike how others in this world seem to behave), I can’t help but remember:
I wonder if Katsuki has been actively suggesting something to this effect on his own or prompting Izuku to do so (or even just chiming in to support Izuku should Izuku have been the one to bring it up first). It doesn’t feel all that far-fetched given what we know about Izuku’s future solo-stint and class 1-A’s mission to bring him home.
Page 9
All Might: "Those who seek power”
All Might: "are not just the bad people."
Katsuki: "Deku trusts you completely, but, well..."
Katsuki: "in the notes on the successors,"
Katsuki: "the fourth's description is the only one that ends incomplete."
Katsuki: "Even though five, six, and seven are written cleanly through their causes of death, so why?”
And my previous point stands. Katsuki’s silence after All Might’s words implies some potential for disagreement. Perhaps Katsuki thinks All Might’s wariness extends to Izuku’s classmates, that the knowledge of Izuku’s power could turn his classmates not merely into targets but into active, antagonistic threats.
To which I’m sure Katsuki would love to call bullshit.
Page 10
Katsuki: "When I brought it up, you..."
Katsuki: "you hesitated to say something, didn't you!?"
Katsuki: "...hey"
Katsuki: "You realized something [bad], didn't you!? One For All-"
All Might: "Because"
All Might: ".........Because I don't understand it yet... I can't declare things I don't understand."
All Might: "Precisely because I am being considerate of him."
All Might: "Just like you are."
Now things get spicy...
Katsuki’s first comment refers back to this scene in chapter 257:
Katsuki points out that the past successors all died young, but All Might hesitates to respond, cryptically saying, “Yes...that’s true,” and failing to elaborate further.
But note how the panel framing looks. Katsuki points out they died young as we see the scratched out section in the notebook. However, Izuku himself notices the scratched out section just as Katsuki speaks, but he doesn’t get the chance to ponder it and work out what’s going on before Katsuki changes the subject. Katsuki then vocally shuts down the discussion of any further tangents, even though he was the one who brought up the topic in the first place.
What does this mean? It means Katsuki picked up on All Might’s hesitation right as Izuku was cluing in on what Katsuki noticed in the notebook. This is the second time in the manga Katsuki has noticed All Might not wanting to discuss a topic in the presence of another (the first being when he asked All Might in front of Aizawa what Izuku was to him during the home visits post-Kamino arc). So Katsuki didn’t want to hash it out with All Might in chapter 257 in order to maintain All Might’s and Izuku’s trusting relationship.
The fact that Katsuki goes on to talk about Izuku’s lack of self-consideration implies Katsuki is worrying on Izuku’s behalf. He specifically points out Izuku’s trust in All Might before confronting him on the fact that all OFA users died young (with one obvious exception). All Might’s response is meant to put Katsuki’s fear for Izuku to rest, because he points out that the reason he’s not saying anything is for Izuku’s own sake. And he points out Katsuki talking to him about this in private is for the same reason.
Katsuki goes into this thinking something bad is in store for Izuku, but All Might’s assurance like this implies Izuku’s not in danger. However, there must still be some danger if Izuku cannot be told. Izuku would only act on information that affects others (as Katsuki points out is his nature on the next page). This is when it becomes clear to Katsuki that All Might and Izuku are the same, self-sacrificing idiots, because the only other person who could be affected by OFA is All Might himself.
And of course, them both being self-sacrificing idiots doesn’t completely assuage Katsuki’s worries about Izuku.
Page 11
Katsuki: “He... as part of his core, he doesn't add himself to the equation."
Katsuki: "I'm sure it's always been that way since way back when."
Katsuki: "Even now, when he can do so many more things..."
Katsuki: "It feels ominous,"
Katsuki: "and I want to keep him away."
Katsuki: "When I didn't understand it, I shelved my own weaknesses,"
Katsuki: "and I bullied him."
All Might: "...So, sincerely participating in his training"
All Might: "is included in [your] atonement... isn't that right?"
Hi, let's talk. [screams]
I spoke in my detailed translation notes about changing the word "root” to “core” to denote Katsuki describing Izuku's core traits. But no translation can easily convey the next word, "bubun," which means, "part." I actively tried to squeeze that word in here, as awkward as it may sound.
Why go to all that trouble? Well, this word has previously appeared in a very important scene running parallel to Katsuki's thoughts in this moment.
It appears in Izuku’s “Image of Victory” soliloquy from Deku vs. Kacchan, Part 2:
Kore wa sasuga ni kimochi warui kara, kimi ni wa ienai mama dakedo…
“Katte koetainja nai ka, bakayarou!”
“Tasukenakya” tte kimochi yori “katanakya” tte kimochi ga tsuyoi toki, boku wa ukkari kuchi ga waruku nattari shite shimaunda.
Sonna toko mushiro kirai na bubun ga hazu nanoni, yappari boku no naka de shouri no IMEEJI ga kimi ni natterunda.
Because this gives me a really unpleasant feeling, I still can’t tell you, but…
“Because I want to win and surpass you, idiot!”
When I feel like “I must win” stronger than I feel like “I must save,” I carelessly do things like run my mouth.
I should dislike that part, but of course the image of victory that’s inside me is of you.
This word is a motif signaling a parallel. Because if you read Katsuki’s thoughts on this whole page, it goes on to parallel further...
Izuku’s “core part” that gives Katsuki an ominous, unsettling (”bukimi”) feeling
Compared to “that part” of Katsuki (running his mouth) that Izuku imitates when he wants to win, which gives Izuku an unpleasant, gross (”kimochi warui”) feeling
So, if we take the parallel to its logical conclusion...
Izuku says he SHOULD hate that part of Katsuki, implying that he actually doesn’t.
Katsuki talks in this scene about being put off by this "part" of Izuku. But...does he hate it, or is it just that he should hate it?
Izuku IMITATES that part of Katsuki when he wants to win. Because Katsuki is his internal image of victory.
So, you know...
IT'S KINDA IMPLIED HERE THAT IZUKU IS KATSUKI'S "IMAGE OF RESCUE," Y ' A L L .
[chapter 285 looms in the distance]
Page 12
Sero(?): "Anticipate as you go!"
Izuku: "I see...!!"
Tsuyu(?): "Think of it as an extension of your own body--..."
All Might: "But he probably isn't even thinking like that, you know."
All Might: "When I said you were similar to Endeavor, I meant that change."
All Might: "He also couldn't reflect on himself until I became like this."
All Might: "The time when you'll be able to talk about it again will come."
All Might: "And I'm not just saying that to make you feel better."
So, Mr. Cheeky-and-definitely-not-subtle-Horikoshi, what was it I said about page 7? That Izuku in the background is a symbolic stand-in for Katsuki?
What’s Izuku learning? To anticipate his opponent and move accordingly, until it becomes second-nature to use Black Whip this way, like an extension of himself...
Anticipate and...
...move accordingly...
...until it becomes second-nature...
...to think of it like an extension of himself...
Horikoshi, you absolute m a d m a n.
Page 16-17
Izuku: No matter what happens to me!!!
As I mentioned in my detailed translation notes: Izuku’s use of “dou narou” (”what happens”) grammatically calls back to All Might’s “kou naru” (“became like this”) on page 12. Izuku is implied to be on his way to end up like All Might, which we all know is a result Katsuki couldn’t divorce himself from. Katsuki even references his lingering guilt at the start of this mini-arc back in chapter 275.
Yeah, that’s almost word-for-word what I put in the translation notes.
Happy anniversary to the most mistranslated and yet most important (fight me) chapter in My Hero Academia!
Thanks to fandom saint @alluratron, I finally got my hands on the raw scans for chapter 284. I’VE BEEN DYING FOR THESE.
And I have to say...it is a veritable t r e a s u r e t r o v e of meta, my friends. More on that here.
Anyways, I went and translated the whole chapter...

"Even though five, six, and seven are written cleanly* through their causes of death, so why?"
(*Katsuki says “written tightly” in Japanese, but that doesn’t mean much of anything in English. He’s stating that the descriptions of the lives of users five, six, and seven were complete and robust in comparison to that of the fourth’s. The “so why?” asks about why the fourth’s is only partially complete.)

"Because"
(Literally All Might says "Not yet," BUT the word he speaks is meant as the first word in the phrase "mada wakattenainda," which translates to "[Because] I don't understand/know yet," which All Might says to interrupt Katsuki. “Not yet” in English has its own baggage were someone to speak it in this situation when really what All Might is doing is cutting off Katsuki’s train of thought and asserting his role as the mentor who knows better, so I went with “Because” instead.)

(Literal) "He... as part of his roots, he doesn't account for himself."
(Contextual) “He... as part of his core, he doesn't add himself to the equation."
(”Roots” has a different contextual meaning (”history”) in English that might confuse a reader about what Katsuki means here, so I changed it to “core.” He’s talking about Izuku’s core traits, who he is deep down. I also changed “account for himself” to “add himself to the equation” to try to capture linguistically a bit of what’s going on with words like “ireru” meaning “put in.” This change allows me to reference Izuku’s analytical nature by invoking math terms, which are already sort of invoked by “account for.” Basically, when Izuku faces a problem, he considers all the variables before coming to a decision, but he himself is never one of those variables.)

"and I want to keep him away."
(Speech bubbles #4 and #5 are one of the primary reasons I wanted to see these raw scans, because I couldn’t tell if they were meant to be in present- or past-tense. After careful consideration of speech bubble #6, which I will discuss below, I’m fairly confident bubbles #4 and #5 are meant to be present-tense.)

"When I didn't understand it, I shelved my own* weaknesses,"
(The kanji reads as "own/self," but Katsuki pronounces it as "temee" meaning “bastard” or "you/he [derogatory]." He's looking back on his past self with scorn and deprecation. This detail, along with “when I didn’t understand it,” denotes the shift to past-tense I mentioned in the translation notes for speech bubbles #4 and #5 above. Click here for further clarification.
“Shelved” is an idiom meaning Katsuki set his own weaknesses aside to ignore.)

(literal) "And I'm not just saying that because I have to."
(contextual) "And I'm not just saying that to make you feel better."
(It might actually be impossible to translate this into English in a way that makes sense without serious doctoring. All Might refers to the Japanese concept of “giri” here, which is about a moral duty or social obligation. (You may have heard this term with regards to “giri” chocolate on Valentine’s Day in Japan.) All Might is trying to tell Katsuki that his chance to talk with Izuku about all of this will definitely come, and he’s saying this not because he has to as his mentor or anything; he truly believes the time will come. This final line of the flashback leads into Katsuki’s panic on the next page, implying he’s worried that All Might’s words may not come true. In other words, if their chance to talk doesn’t come, it’ll be because Izuku dies here, and Katsuki doesn’t want that to happen.)

(Izuku’s use of “dou narou” meaning “whatever becomes of” (but I wrote it as “what happens to”) calls back to All Might’s “kou naru” meaning “became like this” on page 12. Izuku is implied to be on his way to end up like All Might, which we all know is a result Katsuki could not divorce himself from. He even references the guilt at the start of this mini-arc back in chapter 275.)
