[ ✔ ] CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES: ASSIGNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Everyone who wants to participate in the new Care of Magial Creatures assignment read this well! For the next assignment you will all get a miniature dragon to take care of and to examine.

But you are free to choose which miniature dragon you want. There are 12 different dragons to choose from. 

Chose a dragon and submit your preference here or here before the 15th of June! The complete assignment that belongs with it will be up later.

i came in like seahorse

Seolhyun hurried down towards the lake, her feet sliding but remaining beneath her as they carried her to the shore. She had always enjoyed being at the lake, but the fact that she was going to the lake and doing it for her class was like having peanut butter and chocolate together. There should really be a sweet like that. Peanut butter wrapped in chocolate or something like that. Surely there was nothing like that out right now.

"Alright, let's do this" Seolhyun murmured to herself, squinting through the surface of the waters and trying to pinpoint a seahorse or two. She could definitely see shadows shimmering around just a few feet down, perhaps even less. "Sorry horsies, I have to disturb youuu" Seolhyun sang out, getting her wand out and readying herself. She had already looked up a few spells that might come in handy ahead of time when the Professor had said that they needed to try and get the sea horses to fly out of their water haven and into the air, where she would be able to wrangle them (safely) into a container.

The safest way, to her, to disrupt the waters was simply with more water, so she pointed her wand at the lake and muttered 'Aguamenti'. A jet of water burst from her wand tip and onto the lake, breaking the surface and creating a rapid series of ripples and waves that destroyed the mirror quality of the surface. Perturbed, a few seahorses flew out, flitting around in the air, whistling with anger. Seolhyun, heart hammering, changed gears. Aiming towards one particular seahorse with shiny blue scales, she uttered 'Carpe Retractum', and as if an invisible chord had attached itself to the seahorse, it was pulled backwards towards her. She caught it carefully and gingerly placed the creature in the container, full of water so that they would be comfortable.

'Carpe Retractum!', 'Carpe Retractum!', 'Carpe Retractum!' One, two, three. Seolhyun continued to bring in the seahorses. Her container was getting full and she wasn't sure how many more she was supposed to capture. Chewing her lip, she kept a wayward eye on her container and shuffled over to Professor Aiden to alert him that she had caught several flying seahorses and to get his approval for the class assignment.

☑ ᴛʜᴇ ᴀʀᴛ ᴏғ ɴɪғғʟɪɴɢ

'Hufflepuffs,' he thought to himself, 'are particularly good finders.'

It wasn't a myth, or an old wives tale, those who belonged to the house of the badger were actually quite good at finding lost things. Just from Sebastián's observations, it was evident he had an advantage donning robes of yellow and black. 

Once he was given freedom, his feet lead him almost instantaneously towards the greenhouse. Honestly, he worked without tip offs, he just allowed himself to be led by his instincts. Of course his mind screamed plants. It was only once he got to the greenhouse that he started to doubt himself, wondering if Professor Aiden even had a keen interest in plants like himself. Nonetheless, he walked into the empty glass building, and did a quick scan, a shiny glint catching his eye. 

Being a keen herbologist, he recognized the mandrakes from a mile off, and obviously was extremely reluctant to approach them. He couldn't see earmuffs anywhere... His scarf had to do; he made a make-shift turban and wrapped it around his head, inching closer while trying to be quiet. Steadily, he grabbed one, two, three galleons and retreated out of the greenhouse quickly.

Okey dokes, where next? His feet take him off towards the kitchens, maybe because his mouth is yearning for a snack, but he stops mid journey. Was the kitchen technically in-bounds for students? Sure, there would be thousands of shiny pans and what not, but because of knives... Hm. Seb was sure he wasn't supposed to go into the kitchen so often. A professor wouldn't aim to send his students into... Yeah...

Hm.

In the middle of his little crisis, he bumped into the Fat Friar. Of course he questioned him softly, gathering the information that there were quite a few students crowded around the Professor's cabin. Seb had round about half an hour to go, but he didn't really stress, strolling towards the hut like he had all the time in the world. Of course once he got there, he did very efficient trades, gaining a knut and a goblin.

Three items with about 20 minutes left. One item to go to get that all important pass. Seb stopped to think at the fringe of the forest, deciding to let his feet choose one last time. Plants... Food... Of course, the last logical checkpoint was... Quidditch.

He entered the Hufflepuff boys changing room as per usual, searching underneath the benches to check for anything remotely shiny. When his search came up blank, he entered the broom cupboard. Nada. And finally... The pitch. Players had just finished up from a practice, among them a couple of Hufflepuffs. A few polite questions later, Seb was pointed in the direction of his last puzzle piece. He didn't even contemplate searching for more.

He handed in a goblet, a galleon, a knut and the replica with a soft smile. Easy A.

Vini's eyebrows furrowed as he carefully read the instructions. Nifflers! He loved them, they were so cute and affectionate, and generally lovely to be around. Put himself in the shoes of a Niffler for a day? Meh, didn't sound incredibly difficult.

Okay, seeing as he was on the field, near to the forbidden forest, it would make sense logistically if he worked outwards. He only had an hour? Hm. Professor Aiden's cabin was behind him... Was he allowed to go and look inside there? If he was a Professor, he'd hide stuff in his room. Okay. His classmates had scattered themselves pretty efficiently, but none had lingered around that cabin. Vini decided to trust his instincts.

Gingerly, he took a couple of steps forward, walking to the front door and strolling past the pumpkin patch and scarecrow. His hand lifted to knock on the door (of course he intended on asking before intruding) but then a little glint reflected off the sleeve of his uniform. Shiny.

His head turned in the direction of the scarecrow so quickly, he nearly got whip lash. Following the light proved useful, in no time he'd patted down the scarecrow and gotten a knut from its sleeve. With a small smile, he resumed his search, carefully inspecting the pumpkin patch before shrugging and moving on.

Once again, he nearly completely missed his target, the crates. Vini spent a good 15 minutes inspecting the outside of professor Aiden's cabin, but he walked past the crates twice, nearly three times. On the third, he did a double take, thought for a second and then shuffled back to pry open the lid. A chest of goblets-- Woah. He took two, intending to trade if the opportunity presented itself, and then briskly walked outwards. Six items. He wouldn't scatter all of them around his cabin, surely. And Vini was running out of time.

How to become more efficient? 

Flying, that's how.  

Of course! He ran to the broomstick cupboard from the field. He initially stuck to the sidelines, seeing as a practice was taking place but... He saw something shiny in the center of the pitch. It definitely wasn't a snitch (way too still) besides, all of the players were ignoring it. With a huff, he carefully navigated the pitch, narrowly missing a bludger who thought it would be funny to make his life even more difficult. The item was something that had to do with Ravenclaw, and there were a few, but most importantly it was incredibly bright and shiny. Assured it was part of the task, he shoved it in his pocket. One more item to go.

Taking out his battered but trusty stick and then hopping on and flying over the pitch saved a lot of time. School was so so big, and he only had 15 minutes left. Flying over the grounds made it easy to spot sparkly items from a far, especially since the weather was good for flying. He swooped down for a few false alarms, confusing yellow with gold occasionally and picking up the odd Hufflepuff scarf or discarded earring. A quick encounter with the Fat Friar gave him the information that Professor Aiden was seen earlier on hanging in the courtyards. Feeling like a detective, Vini headed in that direction.

Six minutes to go and he spotted something glistening in the courtyard fountain. As part of Muggle Studies and his own keen interest, he understood that Muggles threw money and spare coins into fountains for good luck. Wizards weren't the same. Suspicious, he flew down, landing on the edge of the fountain. Was it part of the task? Could he take it? Eventually he grabbed one of the pieces of Leprechaun gold and flew back to the field where the lesson started. How many items did he really have? Did he really have four? Money... Goblet... Diadem... A couple of gold earrings? Was it worth zooming off to find one more and being late, possibly facing a penalty? The answer was no. 

Vini made it back, just in time, submitting his items.

niffler me this

seolhyun was eager to get down to the grounds for her care of magical creatures lesson. it was honestly one of her favorite classes. it was relaxing, less stressful than her other courses, and because of that, she enjoyed it, and that enjoyment came out in her assignments.

rushing down the hill, she nearly slipped several times, but she arrived, winded, at the small group that was huddled outside, waiting for the class to begin. seolhyun skidded to a halt next to one of her classmates, giving them an apologetic smile for appearing so suddenly.

"do you know what we're doing yet?" she asked breathlessly.

after just a few more minutes, class was beginning and it was an absolute rush of fur and feet and hurried, excited voices. nifflers had been provided to all of them and they were told to find multiple objects that had been hidden throughout the grounds of hogwarts.

this was why care of magical creatures was one of the best classes seolhyun had ever attended in her 17 years of life.

"go niffle go!" seolhyun called out to the niffler she had selected.

the niffler, of course, was not aware of how much fun that seolhyun was having. all he knew was that he needed to have treasure. he had to sniff out treasure. he craved treasure. the little creature scurried away from the human that had set him free and sniffed at the air. he took off, flitting around a few massive crates around the side of the cabin. he sniffed and sniffed and sniffed. there was something big here. 

a glint of gold, cold metal in his mouth, the niffler had a goblet. he moved frantically, dodging around other eager nifflers before dropping off the cup in the females' lap. seolhyun let out a woop of excitement, cheering on the little critter as it took off not a second later.

gold gold gold.

no this wasn't gold. he was sniffing something else. he met a wooden stake, thrusted into the ground, a strange man hanging onto it. he began to climb, little claws digging into the fabric of the pants, the shirt, until he had found what he was looking for; a tiny, bronze knut. he bit down onto the cold, smooth metal and scampered back over to the young girl. he paid no attention to her smiles or words of encouragement. he just needed the treasure. he stuck his snout in the air. he caught something on the wind. it was further away. he streamed past the ravenclaw girl, who was tempted to get up and follow but ultimately remained where she was.

plants. dirt. lush greenery. he dove into it all, seeking out that scent that he was so addicted to. there was something here. he darted in and out of lush leaves, huge and hanging, windy vines that clung to his tiny legs, until he had found a cluster of potted plants. he slinked between the clay fixtures right to the very back where he spotted that glint of gold that he had been craving.

another piece of treasure dropped off and he was on his way again. leprechaun gold. a sickle. he was almost done. the scent was faint now. his human seemed extremely pleased with his efforts, however, and for once, he actually felt like he was getting his determination from something other than just strictly his lust for expensive things not the only taste in his mouth. he wanted to please.

but he was missing something. he was missing something and time was running out.

seolhyun was starting to get worried. she took peeks at the other students piles. although some didn't have everything she did, she did see that there was one large thing that she was missing; the diadem.

by the time class had ended and the nifflers (with some difficulty) had been collected and returned back to their enclosures, seolhyun had five of the six items. the one that was still eluding her? the diadem. she was disappointed, but at the same time, she couldn't believe the ease and speed with which her niffler had found the majority of the treasures. feeling confident, she reported her nifflers performance to the professor, hoping she was getting a good grade.
