Baking Sweet Potato pies in Germany was not nearly as easy as it sounded when I shrugged at the suggestion that we bake four. Every year, I invariably end up making a handful of pies either for Thanksgiving, Christmas or both. Already this year I had made four pies for Thanksgiving in New York, leaving two with my family to bake in my absence.

Little did I know that pretty much everything is different here. First of all, they don't make pies. The pans are large and shallow. There are way too many kinds of flour, the butter is fattier, evaporated milk is called Kondensed Milk. Everything is measured by weight not volume and to top it all off,  they do not - I repeat- do not use either brown sugar (the soft kind) or vanilla extract in their baking. I had to make my own versions of both!

All in all, the pies were fantastic and even with the trouble , it was still worth it to bring my favorite christmas tradition from Harlem to Kirchheim.
